But that doesn't always work because when driving I like to bring the steering wheel all the way down, and being a taller person, the steering wheel blocks the upper portion of the instrument cluster where the blinkers are. And if I have music on, I can't hear the clicking. Am I alone in this?
No. You are not alone here.
I got used to it.
G-series is back to the "normal" turn switch....

Ps: Start/stop with the euro-setting "not remember me disabled" is a pain too...

In the early 1970s the turn indicator stalk was on the right side of the steering wheel column. Just imagine the apoplexy!

Then you are doing it wrong, for lane changes use the quick tap to have it blink 3 times, then it turns off, you don't have to worry about it.

or if you hard pressed it, you have to know that it doesn't automatically shut off and click it back.

Hard press only when turning, that way when the steering wheel returns it turns off the indicators also.

If you can't remember that you hard pressed it and didn't make a turn, then I can't help you there....

Just be a bit more aware of your instrument cluster lol it's not that hard. I'm that asshole that honks at people when they forget to turn off their turn signals at a stoplight or when they're signaling left while being in the furthest left lane already.

Is it poor German engineering, or simply German engineers will expect drivers to seat themselves in an efficient position for driving?

If you look at it from a driving efficiency perspective, the driver can set up his/her position and be able to see all the controls.

If we choose some odd seating combination, obviously the controls can be obscured.

Then I'm one of the 'smug' BMW drivers, who can see all the controls when driving.

Have no issue changing to different designs of driving controls. Can't really understand how, as I was driving BMW pre the "how have BMW got it so wrong" days, and changed to the new system without any issue whatsoever. Must have some German DNA in my blood.

I completely understand the preference argument, but some posts are clearly not simply a preference issue.

I was driving BMW with the original system, only took a few days to get used to the soft and hard resistance points of the switch, and the optional ways to cancel. Soon became second nature.

I like them because they feel expensive and don't make that ridiculous ugly plastic "click" noise that cheaper stalks make.

Regardless, unless I am in heavy traffic I don't use them. Egg me on about being a stereotype all you want, Idgaf

My 2017 F30 has turn signals that work like this. Depress to the point of resistance, it blinks three times and returns to center. Depress past the resistance point, it stays there and returns to center as you are straightening out the wheel. I stated this in my F30 review and got some feedback from members, apparently the F30 didn't always work this way. (?)

My E92 always returned to center.

I didn't have a problem with either method.

This half on, half off etc jesus, too much to get right, should just be simple. They really do burn money on the stupidest things.

I really genuinely think this is a user issue, not an engineering one.

Exactly. If you can't heard the "click click click" turn down the fucking radio. Contrary to popular opinion the automobile is not a sound system, it's a mode of conveyance. So when listening to music, books on tape or commentary gets in the way of driving, turn it down and drive.

.......
Damn BMW for making only two signals that let me know my turn indicator is on. How can I enjoy myself and know without having to put any effort into driving?
Nobody noticed those flashing amber bits at the trailing edge of the rearview? - I discovered that they also seem to coincide with the flashing green ones on the dash. Surprised nobody took the opportunity to gripe about how awful bright they are, hard to miss actually. But I confess that I had some hate too, until I learned that you can cancel w/ either direction half-push (initially I would over-correct and be 'that guy' who's blinkers were going either way like I couldn't make up my mind.

And anybody who ever got the thrill of having to deconstruct the entire steering wheel to fix that stupid bit of plastic they use to cancel the old ones out can tell you why the new version has advantages.

Exactly! The rest of the road already hates us. This design just makes it worse.

I like them, except that I am OCD and I want the turn signal to click 4 times instead of 3, but there is no option to change it. Woe is me!

With coding you can have it click 3, 4 or 5 times. I've re-coded to click 5 times.

It is possible via coding.

This whole thread is useless....I have never had a problem with my turn signal function! I payed specific attention as I drove last week...NO PROBLEMS at all and never have been. I can also hear the flasher over the stereo...however they ALWAYS cancel as designed!

You sir must be perfect! Even though bmw has re-engineered their turn signals for 2018. They must be the idiots and they should have consulted with you first before they made any changes

Somehow I have the old style stalk and stays on while I press it all the way. I recently bought the car and I would like to change that back, it is very hard to light press it since it is very sensible and when I active one tap triple turn signal I push it all the way down accidentally and it bugs me. I drove all my family's BMWs for some time and their stalks are not like this, only mine. Was it modified by the previous owner or it is simply just like that? One thing to note is that it makes many clicking noises(not the ones from the dash) when the lever returns to the initial position after completing a turn. Is it broken?
