Good news indeed.

Not if your one of those poor Trivett customers that air freighted their roller's to avoid the additional tax

For once the Greens and Family First did something useful

Comments like this make me cringe "Mr Swan said the opposition had voted for lower taxes for Rolls-Royce drivers, rather than lower interest rates for working families doing it tough."

That party really has no idea about what cars really cost, not that hard to get a car that fits in the luxury tax bracket nowdays.

Either way good news that the tax is defeated for now, but all it will take is one of the Greens or the Family First member to vote with Krudd and it will be passed

The greens (yes, all of them) voted in favour of imposing the increase in LCT.
What happens next will be the interesting part....

Correct .... The Greens voted for the increase in LCT because they got their request to exempt cars that were environmentally responsible.

Yes & No.... (This is me being pedantic)....

Choosing a car that is environmentally responsible is rather subjective and obviously the greens are very much struggling with the concept.
As was demonstrated on topgear not that long ago, the E92 M3 4.0ltr V8 provded to be more economical than a Toyota Prius around their test track under identical driving conditions (The Prius went first and the M3 followed 5m behind it the entire lap).
For highway driving the new 911 carerra S is more economical than a 4 cylinder Toyota Camry.

Yes i know i am being a tad selective about the examples i've given, but then again so are the greens. The Toyota Prius is probably the worst car for the environment through the lifecycle on the road today, due to the use of the Nickel metal Hydryde batteries it uses.

If the greens were truly after environmentally friendly motoring the answer is simple get us all a Tesla (yes, wow that is one awesome car too), and power the grid with nuclear power (no GHG's there, oh and before someone goes 'oh what about the waste?' the uranium was radioactive before it was dug up and it's radioactive after it's used, so there is no bid deal about the storage of waste, just put it back where it came from sealed nicely in some concrete if you so wish).

I too was happy for the defeat. Seems like Krudd will be re-introducing it asap, and if it is defeated again there will be a nice little double dissolution in his back pocket.

I laughed at the cartoon in the Fin Review today - but unfortunately that is how the Krudd clan see the LCT... I too cringed when the Greens started talking LCT breaks for environmentally friendly cars - I thought here's a slippery slope from which we will never recover, and the whole car industry above the LCT threshold would promptly go to hell in a hand basket if adopted *sigh*

Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I am not in the middle of some nightmare or drug induced psychosis

The whole thing is so counter economic rationalism, and just makes me want to self combust!!!

I'm with Jamie with the proviso that Fielding has indicated more than once that if tourism and farming were given some concessions on this he could change his vote.

Lets see what happens.

ok forgive me for sounding like a noob here, but fuel economy is not directly related to CO2 emissions right?

which do you guys consider a car to me more "environmentally responsible"? one that consumes less fuel (therefore reducing the demand on our ever-depleting oil reserves) or one that produces less CO2 (therefore reducing greenhouse gases)?

i know in the UK you pay road tax according to CO2 emissions so therefore a Citroen C3 cost less in tax than a VW Golf. Fuel economy doesn't factor in the UK system.

I think "environmentally responsible" would be a combination of both consumption and emissions. This issue will be heavily discussed in the comming years as companies start getting hit with carbon taxes.

As for my original post, I didn't know the Greens jumped onboard at the last minute to support the increase of the tax.

Ah yes the carbon taxes, another great idea by Krud

Much easier to get stuff produced overseas, where you can pollute all you want with no silly tax!

G'day Guys, my first post here, pity it has to be on this thread.

I'm going into my BMW dealer on Saturday (Sept 20) to order my long awaited e92....but thats for another post.

It seems that BMW are still quoting their prices with the 33% LCT included ...apparently they have to... so we arent clear of this mess yet.... I'm just hoping by the time my car is delivered in January that this whole thing is sorted out and I dont have to pay the tax... its just plain wrong.... as mentioned above, if we have to have the tax, the threshold needs to be somwhere around $150,000.

Welcome,
The LCT legislation is to be re-introduced this week, expected Wed/Thur, so keep an eye on the news and hopefully you will have your answer prior to going to the dealer this weekend. Should the legislation be defeated (for the 2nd time) this week, i would expect the dealer to remove it from your quote immediately.

was told by a dealer that they have been instructed (not sure if it's an ATO or BMW ruling for now or just a dealer thing) that they should continue to charge (and pay) the higher tax until instructed otherwise.

If you read my original post in full, they will stop charging the higher tax immediately if the tax is defeated a 2nd time. That was a quote from the head of BMW for Australasia and his counterpart at Audi echoed the same sentiment.

Just an update on the issue;
The bill was retabled to the senate yesterday (Thurs 18th Sept) and was adjourned, until next week, hopefully it gets canned once and for all then.

thanks guys.... I'm off to place the order tomorrow. I'm resigned to the possibility that I'll have to pay the increased LCT, but my fingers are crossed too that it'll be defeated next week.

I'll do a proper post tomorrow once I've placed the order and my journey to owning my first BMW begins... hooray

Look's like we'll have a final verdict on the LCT tonight.
It's currently infront of the senate & is being debated, to follow it live follow this link http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/DynamicRed/Index.html

Earlier today, the Liberals proposed phasing it in from $90k rather than $55k, however that proposal was voted down.

The final verdict is in... and it sucks...
The LCT increase has passed the senate and will become law.
