Statcounter reports that over the January 2018 to January 2019 period Android made up a massive 74.45% of the sector, with iOS way back on 22.85%.Feb 8, 2019

So I guess the 95% of your clients running iOS must be a location thing for sure

Glad to see BMW finally got together with Google -- apparently the two were "at odds" for some time.

Now the question for myself & many is will this be part of a software update next year? I personally would think that is entirely possible.

Well, live in hope & rot in despair!

It doesn't matter what the market share is if they're not BMW customers. 90% of US Porsche and 80% of Chinese Porsche customers have iPhones. I'm sure BMW numbers aren't off by much.

Any idea if the car has to be manufactured after July or if a car that already has iDrive 7.0 w/ digital information cluster will get an OTA upgrade to activate the feature?

Article on BMWblog says you just need iDrive 7. I assume OTA will enable it but what do I know...

This is great news, I have been cross-shopping others such as Audi because of the AA integration. Glad to know that its no longer setting them apart and BMW is back in the lead in my choices...

I just got my first iPhone a week ago. CarPlay is nice, but it reminds me of when Windows XP came out and people said it looked like Candy Land. These Android shots look cleaner.

Still not really a fan of AA or AC, not much benefit in my eyes.
Really? Have you used it? Pretty useful benefit to be able to have your phone displayed though your on dash screen and control it with voice or touch screen. Especially useful where handsfree phone use is mandatory.

The issue I have with BMW is they seem to be charging a "subscription" to use. It. WTF. I have it in my CX-5 and it was included along with Apple CP with the infotainment system. No charges ever. It shouldn't be a subscription based system.

This is wireless AA only? Very limited Android phone supports that though?

Google it.
So this might have been what i was referring to when it comes to poor sound quality, it just doesn't meet the standards of what i like to hear now we all know sound is subjective and i am no audiophile by any means, but when pushing the sound towards the louder end on the i3s Harman kardon system, with USB it is just so much better at delivering unaltered sound, with BT even with the phones output sound maxed at the higher note it kinda starts fading away like the sound just cant be delivered fast enough so it starts fading away and "Bursts" of sound comes thru from time to time when it is loud enough but then fades again.

So with BT it delivers great functionality for other parts but the sound quality is just not there for me yet.

Could be my imagination or not but i have tested this out in the garage with as little background noises as possible and tried both and the audio from USB wired connection vs the Car play/Bluetooth and imo there is an enormous in difference, now this could be fixed with the newest Bluetooth coding that is coming soon but i doubt we will see that in BMW cars anytime soon, so for me the USB sound > Bluetooth Sound any day of the week for now until the new Bluetooth codecs come but i don't think we will see that in any BMW car until 2025 or so.
If I understand correctly, AC wireless in BMWs actually uses WiFi for audio except phone call which uses BT. That is why the audio sounds significantly better than most BT audio even with some of the newer protocols like APT-X. Higher data rate/bandwidth but pretty prone to problems with interference in my experience. If you can hear a difference I'll have to test it out for myself. I just attributed the low quality to the generally poor quality of streaming audio that is intentional for cost savings and data usage/storage reduction.

Very true, but for the reasons I state above, this is probably not the issue here.

Its an income and location thing.
I work as an android dev, at a streaming company. Where I work I'd guess out of our employees maybe 15% android if that, mostly in the engineering teams. Hollywood for one is very very ios centric. Ask me to name one famous person who uses android and I can think of 1 person. Donald Trump.

That said the US is probably 50/50 android users. More android phones actually get sold, but iphones tend to get used longer (i think this is mostly the lower income people buying used iphones / using a phone for 5-6 years etc). If its not 50/50 its very close. Strangely enough in europe its maybe 70% android, yet BMW didn't support it until now (i think its near 70% in germany)

That said, apple stuff in general is expensive and the demographics skews much higher income, and in the "i drive a bmw or porsche" set. Its got to be easily 85% in the US. I previously worked at a different streaming company that was all free advertising supported streams, and ..in the free tier ad supported world.... 75% android users in the US. Believe me they aren't buying new bmws with idrive 7. they are barely buying $100 cellphones and they are the cashiers and retail sales people around you.

Wow, only half a day decade after the rest of the car industry. And BMW touts itself as innovative and technology progressive. What a load of crap. It doesn't matter, a lot of us aren't going to be buying the new designs with their Beaver faced grills, Hofmeister Kink deletes, and no Zicker line.

Who said it was going to be a subscription? They just announced Car Play was free from now on, so why wouldn't AA not be free as well?

I love when people quote marketshare. Seems they always forget that Android is not only on premium phones but also on extremely price sensitive phones. Remove those from the count and I think we'll see some new stats. Additionally, marketshare for for "Smartphone Shipment" and does it include the secondary markets.

Lastly, the majority of those Android devices cannot support AA wireless.
Smartphones that run on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher are said to be compatible with Android Auto. However, they are not compatible with Android Auto wireless. For wireless connections, Android phones that run on Oreo OS work best.
MS Windows may lead marketshare but that doesn't make it the best OS. MS customers don't even want to upgrade to the latest OS.

Statistics and charts can be made to say whatever the author wants but doesn't mean it's true.
