It can get expensive true. Certain parts are expensive, like turbo's, HPFP etc

Not everything is expensive though. Its thirsty on fuel but which performance car isn't,
Really? I actually my 335i does pretty good...even with the Stage 2+ tune and mods. I can get 27mpg on the highway pretty easy....and low 20's around town. That's much better than other "performance" type cars I've had...especially V8's.

Yes highway fuel consumption is not bad and even city its possible to get 20mpg

Im getting combined about 16 mpg but i do a lot more city driving and I like to go for rips often, haha

so its partly my fault for terrible fuel consumption.

I just purchased a 2013 335is yesterday from a BMW dealership. I had a 2018 BMW 340i lease, but i didn't want to lease again and i was looking into buying a 335i with a N54 and the 335is is honestly the best looking.

So if you have a lucky year and all you do is blow a charge pipe, don't count that as a freebie. Save save save and you'll be fine.
Lol no such thing as luck.

If you blew a charge pipe, then thats your fault for not upgrading a common failure part, its not even that expensive.

If you can't find one at at good price, then you aren't looking hard enough.

If you can find a nicer car for $3,500 with under 100K miles on it.....I would be shocked!

As far as "leaning on it"...I'm running 19psi of boost with the MHD stage 2+ tune (I've done FMIC, catless DP's, intake, etc, etc....since I got it)....and it runs like a champ! No issues bro.

Hell, I can't even buy a nice dirtbike for $3,500!

Thats one sweet looking car mate

You can fix any problem on this and still be into the car for so little it absolutely makes no sense not to enjoy it.

It's stable at speed, stupid quick for how little is done and the cheapest car I've ever owned to have fun with.

I enjoy it so much, it was totaled, I bought it back and fixed it just to keep it on the road. I love this thing.
Seconded,

You get the point... Swap CP with something else like a VANOS solenoid.

Vanos solenoid aren't so common to fail. I'm still running my stock ones at 122k miles.

If the car has been maintained properly its generally reliable.

You get a tonne of problems when owners cheap out on maintenance and expect the car to run like a Honda with zero maintenance apart from basic service

It really depends on what you want. In my mind, you have to look at it from a few perspectives.

Performance
Dig racing? Get another car. That foxbody idea from OP would shine here in comparison.
Track/Circuit work? Definitely get another car like an s2k or e36 or c5.
Roll racing? It's a decent budget car compared to focus st's and n/a mustangs but not really competitive to boosted v8s or more expensive cars like Supras/GTRs. Every car sorta has a sweet spot on power and these cars get expensive to make power past 600 and super hard over 800.

So if you want a 9 second ET, this is not a good bang-for-buck. If you want a 12-sec street car, then they're solid.

Practicality/daily driver? Definitely, if you maintain it. Can't do that with a tin-can 90s honda or the Foxbody. However, if all we're talking about is 400hp while being a good daily, the hot hatches are better value in that regard -- Golf GTI, WRX, MS3/FoST. Other contenders would be a GTO 6.0, IS300 + turbo, or maybe a G37 depending how old you wanna go.
Luxury car? They're just ok. They're no M5 or AMG.
Reliable? Well, I think the previous 3 pages covered this aspect lol

All that being said, I loved my BMWs because of some X factor I can't explain and will be getting another soon.

Gti, wrx and focus st aren't even in the same performance league.

They will be a very small dot on the rear view mirror if anything.

The 335i may not be a 0-60 car, unless you have Xdrive, although sub 5 sec is pretty quick anyway. Roll racing its pretty good,

For the price nothing comes close performance wise.

V8 's are a lot more expensive,

Tuned, the N54 can match and beat the performance of a stock M3/M5/C63 for a lot less money.

Thats seriously fast drew, Xdrive must make a huge difference launching.

I remember my brother launching his 335D Xdrive, only had 313bhp,but it launched really hard and fast.

Can only imagine what your car must feel like.

Whats your 100-200k times by the way ?

I'm pretty sure you would be spanking Most M cars stock, and AMG's haha

100-200 is over 9 seconds, 2 shifts with the auto to get there really holds the time back

im going to get new tires soon, going taller to try and keep it to 1 shift for this run, hopefully knock the time down a bit

unfortunately my area is 90% domestics, so i dont really ever have the chance to compare to anything but a scat pack, camaro or mustang. lol

also, really wish we got xdrive 335 diesels here, thats the only reason i dont own one

That's still seriously fast, M3/M4 fast.

I imagine with a dct you would easily shave off 1-2 secs.

I would have got a 335D myself, but were getting screwed here in uk with Ultra Low Emission charges and even extra parking charges purely for driving diesel unless you have a Euro 6 late 2015 spec car.

if i was guesstimating 475whp 560wtq on E50 with inlets and stg 2 lpfp

last dyno was custom E40 without lnlets or stg 2 lpfp made 441whp / 535 wtq
