Back in March we sold our townhouse in Homestead which is about 25-30 miles south of Miami and moved about 30 minutes south of Indianapolis. Huge difference but we’re happy.

Do it. I just ditched the burbs 2 months ago and moved rural. School is important for us, so unfortunately still had to pay a pretty penny for it, but I am not looking back. All the recent civil unrest makes me glad made that decision.

Peace and quite. Where I am, there's 150 homes on 700 acres. Only downside is I am in a subdivision and can't legally shot guns in my yard.

Might even do a nice garage and wash bay or something if I find a good enough deal.

Anyone else considering a move next year sometime?

This isn't even COVID specific, but rather just wanting to get away from the masses in general.

The only issue that my wife has brought up, is schooling. Not sure how the schooling and social scene are going to be in the sticks and really don't want to do any home schooling.
Yes, we are thinking about it. Kids are grown, so school is not in the picture. Employment is the main consideration at the moment, meaning where we live probably needs to be somewhere near a medium-sized employment market (metro area).

Another factor is that I am not particularly fond of tying my capital up in land and buildings. Prices are too dear for me at the moment and I prefer more liquidity than would be the case with a real estate investment.

On the fence we sit.

I can still see cornfields from my house but am 5 minutes from almost any service, Gb fiber internet, low cost of living... I probably should have tried to get a little more land for my property but overall love where I live.

I live in the middle, between what I call the deep woods and the city. I'm about 30 minutes from the city, and it's quiet where I live with minimal traffic. Once you get further away than that it gets a bit annoying though because you need to drive an hour for everything. I'm a social person but I'd never want to live in the city, F that.

We moved from SF to a Nashville suburb about a year and a half ago, although it's not the country it certainly has that feel sometimes here. For example, my Sister's family bought a 20 acre farm pretty much in the same area we live in. They can't see any neighbors and it definitely has that rural feel to it, and yet they are still close to all the modern amenities necessary when needed. I think a happy balance can be found if you look in the right areas.

PM me if you want any pointers or questions answered. I lived in DeLand for about 6 years and my mother still lives there now (Brandywine subdivision).

I can answer any specific questions for you.

Thanks. I'm going to ride out there this weekend and get a feel for the area. I always like to check out places in the evening & on a weekend to get a true feel for the demographic.

Will let you know what I think.

Not a bad idea at all. Can buy more for the $. Companies are saying they may have to adjust salaries accordingly based on area? I think it’s BS. The same applies to overseas living too.

Plus this guy lives next door. So, you know, if you ever need help disposing of that body I'm sure he can assist!

The fact that guy is next door makes me wonder if he is the reason the house you like is for sale.....

Where the hell have you been? I thought maybe you were protesting and got arrested. But then thought, nah, he'd be out in a few hours. Hope all is well.

We now return to our regular scheduled programming....

Yes - what specific questions do you have? Not what I would call rural - with UCF being right there. If you are trying to stay in the Orlando metro area and be properly out in the country - look at Bithlo. Terrible reputation for being white trash, but there are some nice areas if you dig. Other options that way would be Chuluota or Christmas.

Going north - check out Cassadaga - very ecletic little town.

All is well!
We went up to our off-grid rental cabin for a few weeks. Only fuzzy NPR radio.
Back in Brklyn & the 'civilized' world, I've managed to not post on the more "argumentative" threads, although I sometimes read them.
I did post in "Pets" & "Pic of Day"!
Going back up to the sticks on Sunday.

Yes, you're right! I looked up most of the demographics online and we took a ride out there and it seemed like a decent area. It did seem more secluded in the Zillow add, but honestly didn't feel that suburban. We kind of liked it!

We have friends who live out in Windermere which isn't too far from there and is very nice, but a little overpriced relative to what I can get more East.

Bithlo is a hell no! And Chuluota fits the bill. Definitely country and some decent private schools not too far away.

Still looking everyday, but believe it or not, a lot of the stuff we like gets sold above asking. Call me crazy, but I'm not very keen on the idea of getting into a bidding war in the middle of a recession. I'll wait another year if I have to, but I refuse to overpay right now.

And thank you!

I have lived in cities most of my adult life and loved it. I moved an hour out of Atlanta and was quite content for five years in a house built in 1889. Life changed and I’m back in Nashville now. The small town in Georgia is ridden in Covid19 and Nashville has done much better. I can only wait it out and see what happens next.

Interesting. I've been contemplating the same thing OP. but out here in central Texas. Same reasons, but also wasn't enough land to create my own dynamic shooting range.
