i can say...the afe intake has made my top end noticeably stronger. i raced my friend that runs 12.3 all day long so hes a pretty good tool to test my mods on. by 140 he wasn't as far ahead than when i had only drop-in and we raced 5x's on the same night with cool downs. i honestly didn't think it was gonig to make such a big difference given how many hate threads there are on this forum with the afe . also i use stage0 v3. now before you ask me why im not in stage1. i've tried, but gas sucks balls here so it felt like it was pulling timing and struggling on the top end.
also, wasn't it mr5 or someone that did a test showing you dont gain much more power from putting a catless DPback exhaust if you already have catless dp's? i guess in our cars the two main bottlenecks are the stock dp's and intake? so assuming that test is accurate i'd bet on the jb3 since he has two of the major bottlenecks eliminated vs 1 for the v3. my .02. teri ps...also depends if the v3 is running the right map...definitely changed the outcome for me...

I agree with the people who said do 2-3 runs, then switch cars and do 2-3 more.
That will at least eliminate driver shifting ability. However, that said, I think there are too many variables to determine WHAT will cause one car to win over the other. Dyno test have shown that intakes do very little. HOWEVER, no dyno has fans that blow 100 mph winds either, so it's pretty much impossible to know how much an intake WILL do. But most people WITH intakes believe that they definitely do good, especially at speed. With the mods these both have their are other things to consider. The strength of each car. Some just run better than others, even stock cars can have 10-12 RWHP difference between them. Weight? Is one driver 140 lbs and the other 240 lbs? Amount of gas? Does one guy have 4 gallons in and the other 14? Wheels/tires? Is one on stock wheels the other on lightweight ones? Since both are manuals I suggest you make the runs from low rpms too. This will show the low end as well as high end power of both. Start a race at 20 mph but in 2nd gear. Start a race at 40 mph but in 3rd gear. The other BIG question is whether the V3 car is on the Doomsday or Non-Doomsday map. The JB3 car is a pre 29.2 so hopefully in fairness the V3 is too. If each car has similiar weight, I'd think the V3 car will get a small jump due to a bit more torque down low but the JB3 car might reel it in a bit with the extra air of the intake. I'd say it's going to be close but if the V3 car is on the Doomsday map, it will probably be at a disadvantage. If the car with the better driver in it wins all the races no matter which car he is driving, clearly then the two cars would be very similiar overall. If either car wins regardless of driver, it's clear that is the more powerful car. I've had both tunes on an otherwise stock car. If I was blindfolded and the tunes swapped, I could not tell you which tune I was on (and doubtful 98% could either) they are that close overall. Have fun, and more importantly be safe. |

One problem though is that after a few runs, one or both tuned 335i's could be heat soaked. So, the OP and his friend may have to do a 30 min. cool-down after the first set of runs, then switch cars and do another few runs.

as said earlier, the biggest unknown could be octane.
race gaas in just one of the cars would make a BIG difference...so if you guys really want to know the truth, u need to be sure both cars are on same gas. have fun but be safe...and of course let us know who wins

So basically, a $100 intake will win?
Whats the price difference between JB3 and a V3? I say the winner is the guy with more coin left in his pocket at the end of the day. See, I just saved you guys a racing and speeding ticket. |
