In Massachusetts, a seller cannot impose a transaction fee for a credit card sale. I still see businesses do it though. It's actually against the law. They can impose a limit on the amount of card transactions so it is up to the seller.

https://malegislature.gov/Laws/Gener...40D/Section28A

New York has a similar law but I expect if paying less than MSRP then they could charge the surcharge:

BMW Dealers Charging for Credit Card Use

I am in Newport News VA. There is only one dealer on this side of the water Casey BMW. They charge/add 2% to your bill for using a credit card. Not good dealership so not worth paying them anything extra. Does anyone know a good independent in my are that you would be comfortable recommending for a M5 F10?

Rusnak BMW in Los Angeles just took $5000 deposit on American Express with no transaction fee. $5000 was their limit supposedly. I plan on applying for a new card that has the best bonus the next time I get a new car, with PPF I’ll definitely reach the minimum for the bonus.

Additionally, to improve my credit, I request a CLI with all my card issuers every six months, today I got a limit increase to $35k on my Amex Blue card. When paired with little or no balance it really helps your credit utilization and for the credit bureaus to see you regularly getting approved for limit increases. Although, if the issuer wants to run a hard credit check for the increase, it’s likely not worth it.

Going on 10 years ago....did the downpayment on my Benz E550 using my Merc co-branded Amex. Dealer was fine with it, as long as i covered the like 2.5% transaction fee. $15k down, 5x points per $1 spent at a dealer...worked out quite well.

That just means the dealer was already making a huge profit so they didn't mind paying the A/E fee. IOW, they made out like a bandit.
But as long as you were happy, that's all that matters.

Not to rain on the OP’s parade, but that’s true. They didn’t do that because they’re just such nice guys. Also true, as long as the OP is happy with his deal that’s all that matters.

He didn't buy a BMW on an AmEx, AlisherSk is a spammer with 1 post and his link to Vclub is a malware site. Edit: Post now deleted.

To contribute to this thread, my dealer told me $3000 max, so I used that on a rewards card. That left an additional $8K down payment and I was surprised when they said they would take a debit card -- I thought merchants had to pay transaction fee for debit as well.

Turned out $8K was over my debit card daily charge amount, so the receptionist ran it as credit (salesman was long gone and my wife was sitting in the new BMW waiting to go). Wish I had thought of swapping back to the rewards card, because clearly the person running them didn't know about the dealership limit.

I was told $5k was the limit by New Century, but the manager cleared $6k for a down payment.

I wasn't given a limit at Beverly Hills, but I've gotten several cars from them so they might have made an exception.

No fees for either.

Momentum BMW in Houston, TX allowed me to put $5000 on my credit card with no additional fees.

Principle BMW & MINI of San Antonio, TX charges 3% for all credit card charges, regardless of the amount.

My local dealer has a max. I seem to recall it is $3K.

I totally forgot about doing this to earn rewards. I will give it a try when I pickup my car. I won't get it for a few months but I will update this thread with the dealer name and amount if I remember.
