One of you get on that stat!
Call me weird but I actually enjoy the travelling part of it. I feel like it builds the anticipation and excitement. Like just past this flight is a fun and relaxing vacation. I feel that if I simply teleported to my destination, it would all just make it too easy/accessible and wouldn't be as rewarding of an experience after a while.

That being said... I'll need to borrow that teleporter for the trip back home....

I want to be able to drive a car into the kitchen to unload groceries.

The other day, my DW was running the vacuum through our current living room, and cursing the height of electrical outlets. She said that we should install the outlets in the barndominium at waist height, so we don't have to bend down. I'm pretty sure that NEC dictates outlet height to be one hammer-length above the floor, but there's nothing stopping us from dangling a retractable reel extension cord down from the rafters specifically for vacuum cleaner use.

This led me to think about robot vacuum cleaners, which would never work in our current (small) house because the floor space is too covered with furniture. What if we hung all of the furniture from the rafters, so that the robot vacuum had 100% clear floor to roam?

On an episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson had put together a mood board with pictures of things to inspire him. I'm doing a similar thing, sticking pictures and post-it notes of design ideas like the retractable extension cord reel on the back of our computer room door so that we don't forget them.....
If you meet the code requirements, you typically can do anything else you want. So, put the minimum number/location at standard height, then add all the others you want at higher positions, like for a game room (video and arcade games).

I used to know a guy named Pat Jeski in MI who was single and built a dream home. Very large high ceiling shop with pit, lifts and a bathroom and bar, plus hanging-out area. Small attached apartment one bedroom, kitchen, tv room. Really cool design - had it on facebook for a while so might find old pics there (2009 ish).

The only thing I could get with more money that I actually want is greater security (financial) which would allow more travel. I’m retired and OK, but it is the retiree’s nature to worry about money vs lifespan. I’ve lost my interest in stuff, it just doesn’t do anything for me anymore.

I agree - and the hunt or chase is better than the kill/eat for me. That’s why I prefer driving trips wherever and whenever I can. Even overseas travel, once landed I’d rent a car or ride the rails as a very pleasurable part of the trip.

Just to clarify something - there is no general NEC requirement for receptacle height, although some state codes (CA) do specify. It is very common to put garage or basement receptacles at 48-54”, or estimate the height so that it is above a 48” wide sheet of plywood standing next to the wall. If you want a receptacle at a weird height because it makes sense to you, go for it.

Where it can get complicated is the kitchen receptacles, especially with multiple short counters, islands or peninsula with no adjacent wall, plug-in vs hard-wired for some appliances, etc.

I don't anticipate that being a huge problem. Half of the counter/cabinet/drawer space in our current house is roller toolboxes with workbench tops, and I fully expect to roll them (full) into my race car hauler when it's time to move. One of them is a ~6' roller box with a butcher block top with 20 amps of power strip built-in, which I plan to use as the kitchen island. I'm hoping to be able to get away with a few 240V/30A floor outlets in the slab where stuff needs to be away from exterior walls.

We're building the Garage Mahal for us as a retirement home, not worrying about potential future resale. No granite counters, marble bathrooms, fancy cabinets, etc. I also prefer portable partitions as space dividers, keeping the interior wall count down to near zero with everything portable.

Speaking of bathrooms, I want the guest bathroom to be a plastic handicapped porta-potty in the garage area. I can see the look of disgust on a guest's face now when they ask to use the bathroom and I point them to the porta-potty. When they open the door expecting to be greeted with a dark/smelly experience, the light will automatically turn on and reveal a commercial flush toilet, sink, and other features of a modern bathroom housed inside.

Oh yeah, commercial flush toilets with proper Sloan valves in all bathrooms, because I despise waiting for a home-grade toilet tank to refill between flushes.....

haha i'm learning this the hard way. I love spending time with myself thankfully, but as i'm slowly cutting off relationships that are draining or unfulfilling, man, it's lonely out here.

I'm 36 now and friend group keeps getting smaller lol. I realize a big aspect of this now is actively choosing a child-free life, and a lot of people connect that way. Making new friend connections is JUST like dating when you're older, and you just don't want to have much to do with the majority of them lol.

Friends as an adult is different than when we were younger anyways. Everyone has their own lives going on. Some of my best friends back in Michigan, we may only talk on the phone once a year, and only see each other once a year, but we always pick up where we left off.

Then, as I've made friends living in various states, you'll lose some of those close bonds, but again, not because their bad friends, life just takes over and things fizzle. It's up to us to keep relationships and friendships consistent, whether it be talking once a year, or once a day.

I'm getting more and more enjoyment out of what little free time I get to myself these days. I'm 45 now and the closest of friends are still around, but we rarely have time hang anymore. I'm also in a different situation as my kids are grown and out of the house. Most of my friends still either have kids at home or now have grandkids at home; this plays into it as well.

I went through the same about 10 years ago. I started cutting damaging relationships out, then looked around and realized there wasn't anyone around.

It's sad when we can't afford mediocre performance.

Ugh I despise it, plus we have 2 dogs and one of them is psycho so my gf wont leave them with anyone and those dog boarding places are $$$. Then packing and unpacking and sitting on those horrible airplane seats for what seems like a week and lines to get in lines to get out lines to get a car…

I will say when we traveled in our RV I did enjoy travel days. Mainly because I would typically only drive 3-4 hours a day and when I was done I had all my shit and house right there with me no matter where we were. I think it spoiled me and made me hate other travel modes even more.

If we're going to open up the thread to things other than what money can buy, I wish my mom and my older sister were living so that I could be with them.

The easy solution here is to just buy a private jet.

This would be the appropriate thread for that now wouldn't it....

Well I mean if ya’ll can’t hook me up with a teleporter I would take a private jet as a consolation prize.

I don't need anything, but I wouldn't mind having a North American P-51D Mustang and John Milner's Deuce Coupe to get to the airport.
