I'll take a reliable beater/daily that I don't have to worry about messing with all the time for a few extra bucks vs a headache. One of the reasons we're getting the wife a new car. Her current will just become my beater and I'll deal with it.

Yeah exactly, that's why I was mulling something newer. So let's say the Saab costs me $1500 a yr to keep on the road and a new car is $2500.... i'd likely bite, but at $5k a yr, it's too big a delta for the low, low miles I am doing.

I think it was mentioned before but something like an E-Golf might fit the use-case? Unfortunately even those short range EVs are sitting at a premium ($25-35k). It's hard to find anything that isn't completely beat up for a reasonable price these days.
