I think people wanted a M3 wagon at $85k. Not a $125k wagon. At least that is what I wanted, I never asked for this and not now. About 5+ years too late.

Yup, did this with my M2 in 2016. Everyone was marking up when it first launched so I got a dealer in Florida to order it and ship it to NJ for me when it finally came in. Paid msrp and not a penny more.

A manual touring would be incredible. I have to assume they won't do it, especially since they're only offering the M3 Touring in Competition (A/T) spec. But I'll keep hoping...

If the only engine option is the plug in hybrid, a manual is not possible. Depending on configuration of the power trains (most manufacturers prefer the electrics and petrol to be separate for reliability interns) most of these will have one transmission for the petrol and one for the electric. The i8, the Mini Countryman all 4 se, the euro only X2 plug in hybrid met these criteria.

The exception to this has only been one power train in the 330e and 540e and X3e (and maybe the X5e, but I don't know for sure) which has an electric "flywheel" between the engine and the transmission to drive it. But even these have been auto only because of technical concerns.

I'm doubtful BMW will replicate that feat for the M5 touring. So likely a manual won't be possible.

Because they didn't bring the regular 3 series touring here to start with and the cost to federalize just the M3 touring itself was too high. The assumption here would be that they will bring the regular 5 series touring at the outset and this way they won't have such a high cost to federalize just the M5 touring.
