Saw both today, the X7 felt like an actual SUV. Next to the X5 I did feel like the X5 looked tiny. X7 ride and feel was great. Definitely going with the X7. Will rarely use the 3rd row but it’ll be there just in case!

X7 is way better because you can put the second row back further.
We never use the third row and always have it down.

X5 v. X7 With Car Seats
Both are similar in kid convenience even with child and booster seats. The sight lines are better in the X5, but I am getting used to the X7 and it's a sweet ride too. Width is the same, the 7 is taller and nine inches longer. The X7 has air suspension that the lighter X5 (500 lbs) does not. We have a Mercedes GL 450 in the family and it required replacement of the air shocks at 20K miles. I suspect the bimmer will be similar. Weigh replacing by warranty or your nickle if out of time (36 months). They're not cheap so factor that into your budget planning. I love both models!

I’ve been in the back of our X7 a few times. Wouldn’t want to be back there for a long road trip, but just running around town was fine. Ours was a 6 seater, iirc the middle row “captain chairs” are optional. Had plenty of room our kids and all their crap, and our dog too.
Not sure how much this matters to you, but the X7 gets 7-series level trim Bonus pic of said doggo in X7
