You guys are hilarious. It has fookin 4-5mm in the middle. Which is where the law stands that it has to be under 1.6.

Agreed Carl...........but what it ALSO has to have, according to the regs, is the base of every groove in the original tread pattern to be clearly visible......irrespective of their depth; and it hasn`t.

Carlos - IF you have taken the time to read the information posted by encee and NFS, then you would gleen that the law is not clear cut (it never is believe me). You cannot simply base legal tyre depth tread on the middle of the tyre, the whole circumference has to be taken into account ie. the area of rubber in contact with the road.

Take the car to the VIB and they'll know. Ed will get his answer and so will we.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the VIB?

Vehicle Inspection Bureau. Not sure if they're called something else now tbh (VIS). I was stopped once on a motorbike and the copper noticed that the VIN had been etched on the bike frame and sent the then VIB down to my house who performed various tests on the bike. Long story short, the bike hadn't been stolen but the guys told me they are responsible for assisting the police with investigations regarding motor vehicles and their road worthy condition. Local police would know.

My tyres wore exactly the same way. The rears were down to the canvas on that inner edge and the rest of the tyre was just above 1.6mm when I replaced them.
I did not mean to go to the canvas and would not want to go that far again.

I however would not change the OP's tyres yet as they look fine. As for legal or not - who cares - there are no police around anyway to check these things -

Have a look at bullet point 5, which again points out the requirement to " Have the base of any groove, which showed the original tread pattern clearly visible "
Having checked my dictionary, I'm pretty certain that a groove is a long, narrow channel.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/groove

That would refer to the slots that run around the entire circumference of my tyres, which also feature wear bars.

It would not refer to the much shallower diagonal nicks and slots that formed part of the original tread pattern of my tyres when brand new.

Ah right.

So what happens when the tyres happen to be these perfectly normal road tyres (as shown on the "mytyres" website) ?

As you can see, none of the grooves run around the entire circumference of the tyre, so does that make them not "grooves" any longer ?

I would imagine that you would find that a court of law would judge them still to be classed as grooves, in spite of the fact that most of them are transverse, and do not run around the entire circumference.

I think its abnormal wear to the inside edge of the tyre!

something wrong with the alignment IMHO

mine are being changed next week so ill take a pick of a properly wearing tyre.

Good point

Amazing how something so simple can be so unclear.

It's a shame the original act is not available to view on opsi (only goes back to 1987). But even then I'm not sure it would help.

If the law is that 1.6mm of tread is left in ALL the original grooves, then my tyres only have about 2mm of legal wear on them when they are new.

If that is the law, it's pretty mental and the wear bars that Bridgestone have cast into the rubber are completely useless as they only reflect the available tread on the deepest 'grooves' of the tyre.

So at the end of this, all I can say is you may be right and that if this is the legal position pretty much 99% of drivers will not be aware of it.
