I think you are being a bit of an artful dodger there mate...

OK - I can accept that he will save money on fuel etc, but its not worth much really. As you yourself said he will have to do a lot of miles to make up the difference he has already lost.

I have already said I wasnt trying to offend anyones sensibilities and I am still not - this is how I am unfortunately.

In terms of the points about weight etc - well I mean come on, a 320D and a 335D handle more or less the same we all know that!

Well a SE 320d wont handle aswell as a SE 335d but yeah an Msport one will.

Huh?

No, I already made the point about it not being financially viable, that wasnt my point. My issue is with the keyboard warrior sweeping statements - sugegsting someone would only buy a 320d because they cant afford a 335d, and that there is nothing better about the 320d.

It's horses for courses. I have had a 335d - but in real world driving the performance benefit on our roads for 90% of the time (I've done 3.5k in the last 6 weeks) isnt there (for me).

I also have something quicker for the weekends/track, and prefer to keep the tax bill down.

Have a look at my posts and in what context - all were in direct relation to the thread purpose which is should I downgrade to a 320d to save tuppence? Course you bloody well shouldnt because it has absolutely nothing redeeming about it in that context.

The only argument for downgrading is cost saving and as per the previously discussed mathematics - this is not viable for the OP. He would probably LOSE money because of depreciation by the sound of it.

So to summarise - factually - the 320D has NOTHING to compare it positively with the 335D when taken in the context of the thread and the individual needs of the OP... Possibly, he will get a newer car, or more spec, or ED, or jeez I dont know, keep his licence longer - whatever.

It's inevitable that reasonable comments (from a poster's own perspective that is) can be received poorly by others.

In this instance, the perfectly valid point that because the 335d will take such a huge hit on residuals, the savings on a 320d in running costs will never make up for it and at the same time will offer you a less "involving" drive - i.e speed and therefore, by implication, penis size.

We're all the same you know. "Speed of my car". My car is better/faster/more expensive/more fuel efficient than your car.

Just to stir it up some more, M division and Alpina will not use run flat tyres because of their "handling and ride compromise".

How come, most of us seem to assume that M-Sport suspension is better than SE suspension? We already have jittery behavior over less than perfect roads, I don't see the stiffer M-Sport suspension helping one little bit in that department.

In fact, although difficult to prove, if you put an SE round a track and an M-Sport the most significant difference in time would be the driver, not the suspension. The lower suspension makes it look better but I think that's it, - although I am sure that serious suspension work would make a noticeable difference.

To get back to the "I got a 335/ I got a 320 - nothing wrong with it" argument, I agree with the poster who said cost wasn't the issue in not buying a 335d - I agree as I've already spent more than the cost of a 335d on mine - so it isn't wallet size at stake here - it's back to male genitalia.

As an aside, isn't it strange that the fast car drivers tend also to claim huge mpg in the same breath - I'm maybe just jealous with regard to that one.

M3's beat all of them hands down... lighting touch paper... *running*......

Just my two pence worth.... as the proud owner of a 320d M-Sport Vert I bought mine based on fuel and how the 320d's hold there price.

As for a car, I do agree that 335d will drive better (although never driven one myself) however I've not been disappointed in mine at all. Sometimes on the motorway while overtaking at speed I would like a bit of extra "x-factor" however a remap will fix that up, and to be honest it's not even a big issue for me 95% of the time.

Would I switch if I was in the same position. Unless it was a deal where I got money back from the deal, then no. The 335d is a great car and to dare I say downgrade to a 320d I would not want to spend out more for it.

I know at times such as these with fuel on the up again it's tempting to move, however it will cost you more right now.

The only thing I would say to finish, is drive a 320d for the day, see what you think and see what the dealer will do a deal for.

Just my 2 ct's worth - see the chart, Pierburg, used by BMW. If you have a 335d and do 700 mls/week you spend all that time at 100% EGR. Engine wise you're better of with a 318d, where you might get it outside the EGR envelope. On what you save get a 1200GS /similar for the kicks.. That's what i did..

I had an E46 330d.

It was time to change and I was seriously impressed with the 320d stats - mpg and performance - and promptly when to test drive one at my local dealer about a year ago (I was thinking of a new Edition model). I also mentioned that I would consider a 330d/335d second hand (as I didn't really want to spend more than £25-28k).

I test drove an auto 320d and was seriously impressed - seemed faster than my old E46 330d and promised seriously better mpg.

The dealer then let me go out in a new E91 330d touring demonstrator. It was obvious after about 5 mins that the previously impressive 320d would ultimately prove to be dissappointing and live in the shadow of my 330d test drive. I was so impressed with the 6 pot grunt and smoothness it became clear that either a 330d or 335d was the way to go - and I ended up buying a loaded one second hand, knowing that I could keep it for 100k+ miles without regrets on performance or spec.

If you can learn to squeeze 35-40mpg out of the 335d you'll find this a better way to go - you still need to drive a 320d fairly carefully to get really good mpg and save "significant money". I had a 118d Manual Convertible the other day as a loan car - whilst I did get it to do 60mpg on the trip back to the dealer, my initial "play" with the car (where I was not really hustling the thing much), had it doing 38mpg. Hence if you really drive a 318d/320d with kind of gutso your 335d gets the mpg will take a bit of a beating.

Its also worth looking at the difference in mpg as a percentage - i.e. the difference between burning gas at 20mpg vs 40mpg is massively bigger in cost terms than between say 40mpg and 60mpg.
