I just changed my plugs 5 months ago......they should still be good.

When was the last time that you changed your plugs?

TIA

I changed them at about 22k miles and I am now at 31k. Modded for all but about the first 5k miles.

Since this thread seems to be blowing up, lets go over a few things. If your misfire is at high rpms (the BT code will list the rpms), then it is more than likely ignition related. First and easiest would be to swap coil packs on the misfiring cylinder with a coil pack on a cylinder that is not misfiring. Write down what coil packs you swapped. If the misfired jumps to the new cylinder then you know it is the coil pack. If the misfire remains in the same cylinder, then go on and just change spark plugs. If that doesn't fix it, then it may be injectors or other things many will not be able to DIY fix.

If the misfire is at low rpms or idle, then check the codes. If it is only a misfire, then you can use the above method. If there are fuel pump codes too, then it is more than likely your HPFP going out.

Former Boosted IS: My misfire only happens as soon as I start the car when cold. If I shut it off and turn it back on the limp mode goes away. However, the codes still read misfire on cylinders 5 & 6. Should I try to swap the plugs out first as mentioned above by David 12? I have yet to get a misfire while driving hard. Thanks everyone. This thread does seem to be growing by the day.

I've gotten misfires at my dyno day before.......But that was solved by fresh plugs. Now the misfire and engine malfunction light comes on on cold-starts. Even went as far as swapping the coils from cylinder 2 to 1, and 3 to 4. No luck there, so I'm scheduled to bring my car in ASAP.........We'll see how that goes, keep you guys posted.

So, I called bmw dealership and asked about my misfires.

They told, that the reasons could be:
  • spark plugs (I changed them some time ago, just 1000 miles driven)
  • coils - most likely
  • injectors
.

When HPFP fails, a car starts roughly and my car starts normally.

I also asked which cylinder is which.

Cylinder No. 6 is the closest to cabin, firewall; cylinder No. 1 is the closest to the front bumper.

Have you tried switching the coils prior to bringing it into the dealership?

So it is verified which way to count the cylinders, good job!

I should be getting a call from the dealership by the end of today. We'll see if it's the injectors or something else!

Who said I've brought it to dealership?

Switching coils is what I'm going to do this weekend, hopefully.

I am glad the issues are being resolved. Did you have to remove mods before taking car in?

I know it is frustrating to sit without a car. let us know the final outcome.
