I like them. Have nothing else to compare them to but the oem summers. It's almost let's me drove like an ass in wintery conditions. Gives me a good amount of confidence in shitty weather

This is good to hear. So you can sort of book it around? Today I was in a truck with all seasons and it had trouble, but it had no TC so I had to control some nasty slides all day

For the most part yea. U can zip around while other people are slow poking it up. I give it up to BMW they did a great job on the TC.

How about stopping power? Do you feel comfortable darting past someone and having to come to a complete stop in say 40 feet?

Come on now...please tell me that's not a serious question. LoL Winter tires were not created for that purpose although its supposedly suppose to help. It don't matter what kind of tires you have, no matter what you're not going to stop so fast in the snow.

I was fooling around in the open road. It was 28 a fresh flurry of snow came down so it was lil slick out I was prob going around 50-60 and I jammed on the brakes and it took about 3-4 seconds to come to a controlable speed where I could stop or lane change quickly. I'm bad with distances but for those conditions and the type of traffic it was safe had there been more cars it would of been risky. I'm thinking at 40 ( conditions permitting) you'll have great control. But there's so many different factors that come into play it's hard to say. You can't over come the inherent lack of friction with cold/wet weather but you'll find yourself saying damn these things work. Takes a few hard brakes/accerlations to find out where the limit is. I just do it on the open road to get a feel for where it is

moo ha ha, I'm not dumb I more or less know the limits, but I just wanted to know how sticky the compound was really.
I had some fun with them today and they have enough slip to upset the car on purpose to have some fun, and they do stop pretty well in the snow...controllably and with some room.

Doesn't mean I'm gonna go out and try racing people and overtake in these conditions lol just nice to know how far I can take it especially in an emergency.
I like to be able to accelerate in the snow, I've been in situations where I've watched a car come sliding at me really fast and I've had to get on the move quickly

Al I know they help to some extent...I'm just saying that it's not practical to jam on your brakes and expect your car to stop without sliding or stop like it was dry pavement. The main purpose for snow tires is more or less controllability because we all feel comfortable pushing our cars in the snow, whether you have an i or an xi, with the comfort of knowing we can do it with control instead of feeling like its out of your hands. in the -20 wind chill, tires handled pretty well. they didnt feel like large blocks of ice, which is nice

I wasn't trying to discredit you. However, in the video you can see that when they were pushing the cars pretty hard on packed snow and came to a hard stop, the difference in stopping distance with winters was 59 ft compared to 89 ft (30 ft or a 33% difference). I'd say that shows that in having winters on vs AS and trying to hard stop there is a substantial and measurable difference.

To answer the question posted, would I feel comfortable darting past and stopping in 40 ft? Depends on the conditions. The dryer/warmer the more comfortable I am feeling. While I am not advocating driving like an idiot, you can still drive like a normal person (not like us). Just leave a little more room. If you live in Chicago and the surrounding area, that is impossible because everyone else drives like a frikking gramma that has a vibrating egg in their ass as they are hitting climax. Ooo...an inch of snow....must drive 20 mph below posted speeds...

Just got my Dunlop Wintersport 3D 225-45/17 mounted on my stock style 185s today. We got our first snow this week (a record late arrival for the first "measurable" snowfall for my area in Vermont) but it's already all plowed and melted away.

I had the same tires on my FWD Mazda6 which which made the car unbelievably better in the snow over its stock AS Michelin Pilot variants. I drove my 328xi in the snow last year on the Bridgestone AS run-flats and it was impressive, mainly due to the x-drive. I'm not going to miss driving on those hockey pucks and I figure I'll be unstoppable with x-drive + snows.

I already have the compact spare/jack from Tischer; now I just need to scope out my summer shoes. (Leaning towards 18" V710)

Damn my car/rims are dirty... but it's a DD in Vermont :/

Oops - was searching, didn't realize this was a "great lakes" thread. Oh well

1 - I lived in MI for a few years

2 - They were trying to reclassify Lake Champlain as the 6th "Great Lake" at one point, but that didn't fly very far

I bought the XI to drive it daily/year round... I'm trying to minimize the inconvenience of winter and I think the Dunlops will help

How is your setup working out Darkcyd? I am also in the Madison area and have yet to purchase winter tires. No snow tires and a 335i means its sitting in the garage right now for me. Why did you go with 18" vs. 17"?
