Actually it will generally over fuel if the MAF is dead or unpluged and should restore some lost performance so it may well be that your MAF is OK
Many MAF's incorporate the intake air temperature sensor as well (not sure about yours) and if disconnected, or the sensor fails, the ECU uses a -5C default value. This should flag up a fault however. An old MAF gets a build up of contamination on the sensor surface which in turn under reads the actual airflow. This generally gives an under fueling situation and poor low down performance. This generally does NOT flag up a fault. May be time to do an injector leak test or look for something else? However, i would still consider replacing the MAF. I replaced one once at 40K miles and instantly got 2-3mpg more. Not what you are looking for but every bit helps. |

I must say I've been really dissapointed with the performance and economy of this engine (163 bhp). I had a C-Max 2.0 tdci zetec with 136bhp which felt way faster than the BMW, it accelerated hard in all 6 gears and could easy pull 60mpg on the motorway. The BMW feels flat until 2500rpm and theres no pull at all in 6th compared to the Ford. Also are BMW fly by wire throttles or old fashioned cable types. The Ford was fly by wire and was much easier to drive economically. |

Seriously guys, unless you are driving really hard, or in heavy urban conditions, the 320d should be returning 40+ mpg. Even my 330d touring auto has returned a genuine 37mpg over 35k miles.
Cruising at around 70 mph will give a good indication of how a car is really doing for mpg. I'd expect over 50mpg from an 'in tune' 320d saloon. The 330d auto will easily return mid 40's at a 70 mph. HighlandPete |

Guys are paying up to, and even over £1000 for sorting injectors, (new injectors) depending on whether it is one, or more, and how severe the wear is. Be a bit careful on the quality of some refurbished offerings, there are some who have wasted their money and had to go through it again. HighlandPete |

Right Pete,
Here is the rub.........using the wee window wiper gauge.......sitting at 70 on the motorway using cruise control, it sits at 40-50 mpg. i would pee creme cheese if I was averaging figures like that. Example, coming home from the de-map at the w/e:
I can ROAST an Accord ctdi ALL DAY and get 45 mpg. Fug A |

£500 is my "sort it out budget" and that involves me selling my car to do so but we NEED this car to not be a cock. Its our family car. This is why I really cant afford to just "try" things like a MAF sensor.....you know what i mean? That would be 200 quid swiftly out of the budget that could be put towards another injector. I will have to try and find out who does these "leak down" tests on injectors in Northern Ireland. Any NI peeps on here know any? I thought I was buying quality but it appears that I was sorely mistaken. I think I will have to start eyeing up the auto trader for other options Regards A |

I have 318i, and its not bad on fuel at all.
Did 200 miles motorway driving on weekend, went to drop off friends in airport. 4 people in car, some luggage, car did 43.7 mpg on motorway, cruise control set at 70mph. On the way back, same journey, but this time only 2 people in car and no luggage, cruise control set 70mph (80 mph), car returned 47.8mpg. Cost me around £20-£25 to do 200 miles. I had before 2 another bmws, and both were petrol engines, i do find bmw petrol engines very economical. When i was buying my e90 318i, i could get 320d for extra few £££, or get bit higher milege 320d. My last car was TDI, and it was great on fuel, but servicing cost, repair cost, was taking double amount money. |

Did 680 miles on Friday and averaged 60.9 mph and 42.1 mpg.
Pretty impressed for a 335D pre ED with autobox and carrying 4 people. My co driver - who usually drives a Subaru was MIGHTY impressed. Loaner 320D manuals I have had have averaged approx 45-55 mpg in light use

Assume the warning light is because you are low on fuel?
Grey man - very impressive! I'm getting very low 30s to the gallon in mine but it's all country roads around here and I tend to "have fun" wherever I go! |

Do you know the history of the car, whether work has been done on it? You really need someone who understands diesel, to give it a good inspection and literally apply an ear and eye to what is happening. If you are using so much fuel it must be smoking more than it should, the evidence will be there. I can only see it getting worse, if it is filling with carbon/particulate buildup. HighlandPete |

But thats just it Pete mate (and thanks for the response by the way) the car doesnt puff one bit of smoke at all since the map was taken off.
Nothing Even today with the sun behind me and i (for once) roasted it......not....one....particle. The only smoke i get is a wee spurt at startup and im putting that down to glo plugs |

Just to show what's possible: Smog alarm here last monday & tuesday, motorway speeds limited to 57 mph something (90 kph), mobile speed traps everywhere. Managed to stay out of traffic jams, car got 73mpg average on 35 mls travel (nearly all highway) going to office while speeding at 65mph indicated. That's on one size oversized winter tyres, and leaving from indoor garage.)

Mega......switching down to DTC only suggests non "docile" intentions....
Pete, havent had a chance.........its going to have to go to a stealers/specialist to get the brake warning lights out anyway so i will just stump up for a full diagnostic..... I spoke to a Bosch diseasel specialist and he said he would happily check the injectors if required but if the car isnt smoking excessively and starts and runs fine, he could do no more than BMW computer diagnosis Im running a dose of diesel cleaner through it now but i suspect it wont to owt seeing as i have been running with Millers additive for a bit now..... Doesnt get any better A |
