its not really a "turn" --
its called "railroading" ![]() its really not good for your car to sit and idle for a prolonged period of time, not just based on the environment -- but it can (if done on a consistent basis) minimize the catalytic converters' ability to do its job. remember, since the car must run through the cold enrichment cycle, this is when the a/f mixture is the richest, so much, there is a secondary air pump which supplies additional air into the exhaust to get the catalyst up to temp. allowing the car to run for a extended period of time will (if done regularly) have you at the back of the car saying, "why does my exhaust smell so funny" -- and just maybe wind up with issues with the cats... not saying this will happen with every car, or even your car.. but it does happen, and people do complain about it.. but simple solution is to minimize your idle periods and drive the car till it warms up... and for the guys that drives 1-5 miles to work.. please drive the car ... or at least change your oil at much shorter intervals than the owners manual or the CBS data indicates.. if the engine never warms up it wont go into closed loop functions -- thats when you start to get some real boost. cheers |

like i said before, it will take thousands of years if anything to feel the effects of global warming. I will know my children grandchildren and hopefully great-grandchildren very well and they will be fine. After that no one will even know me so I could care less, cause I wont know them either. They'll be like, 'didnt' we have like a great grandfather who lived in vegas or something?' "maybe we did but who cares". Then they'll say, "hey do you think he drove a bimma and thats why its so hot here in the year 3010?"......"no, i think it was all china".

Oh also make sure you don't write on any paper or sit on any wood furniture because they have to cut trees down, and there is now less trees to absorb the smog from my car idling, so this is just asking for trouble in about 2 billion years. who knows what Mr. BMW jr. jr. jr. jr. jr. jr..............may think about you writing on paper and such and helping destroy his precious ozone

glad to hear it takes everyone else as long to warm. i've only seen my temp needle move a few times and i thought that was strange.
meanwhile i get in the acura and temp is up by the time i'm pulling out of the neighborhood...

I wonder if the non-turbo guys have to wait the same time for warm up? Quote:

Does it have to be either A or B? I guess you can't care about something outside yourself and still have fun. Nobody was disputing wanting to get inside a warm car in the dead of winter. I turn on the car, turn on the defrosts, blast the heater and get to work scrapping the ice off the windshield.

Oil weight makes a difference IMO. I've run the BMW 5W-30, Mobil 1 5W-30, and now the Mobil 1 0W-40 LL01 and the 0W-40 definitely takes the longest to warm up. I'd say the M1 5w-30 warmed up the quickest and the BMW/Castrol 5W-30 was somewhere in between. At least these were my experiences. They all still take too long when it's cold.
It doesn't help either that we have what? 7.5 qts of oil in our engines compared to other 6 cylinders with like 4 or 5 quarts of oil. I think I'll be running Mobil 1 5w-30 year round as temps never go over 240-245 anyway. That LL01 is for those crazy 15K intervals anyway, I'll stick to the 5K mile intervals. I'd say the 40 weight is good for track use thou....or hot climates. Last edited by Topless///M; 02-10-2010 at 06:18 PM.. |

I live in AL and it still takes a long time to warm up lol... so don't blame the canadians! I agree with Slidewayz how ironic our cars are the slowest to warm up and then the fastest to overheat
![]() The far left tick where it sits at first is what, 160? I usually won't give it more than 1/2 gas and won't go above about 4k rpm's until I come off that first tick. After that I will drive harder but won't all-out "WOT and redline" until it gets atleast 3-4 ticks off the bottom... I guess close to 200F. I know with the new FMIC and using Redline this seems to take even longer. Even after some interstate "racing" I still never see it really get over 240 (2 tickes left of center). I think I saw it hit close to 250 once this summer when it was super hot and humid and I was abusing my car a bit. 6MT with stock oil cooler btw |

Man, there was chilly dip at the party I went to tonight but I couldn't have any. I thought I might fart and pollute the ozone so I just said no. Didnt even have water cause wasnt sure if it was kosher, plus I was protesting the use of trucks to deliver the water to the store. The trucks are not hybrid and they pollute while delivering all the green products.
I think i'll kill myself now but then I would rot and that would also create a lot of gas and methane and pollute. What the heck can I do. Oh and I am writing all this while my car is idling...shit

My RAV4 also warms up in like 3 minutes too, and I was also wondering why the huge difference with the BMW taking like x5 more time?

The Acura and Toyota shows the Coolant temperature as oppose to BMW Oil temperature.
