Do you know which audio system he has? Yes, the L7 woofers make pretty good midbass drivers, but not so much the HiFi woofers, and no way in hell can you use the base audio woofers in any kind of quality aftermarket system.

I'm running my stock L7 woofers off an MRP-M500, 75W @ 8Ohms. I didn't want to risk wiring them down to 2Ohms, 250W! I wasn't sure if the woofers would be able to handle that much power. I have them bandpassed between 150Hz and 65Hz. I want to swap my M500 for an F300 so I can have them at 150W @ 4ohms, in stereo too. But noone wants to trade Playing them down to 0Hz would be the same as not setting any filters on your amps. The signal in the L7 system is actively low-passed around 150Hz and anything below around 26Hz, humans can't really hear. Not sure if you meant to put 0Hz.... |

I would still HP the L7 woofers somewhere above 0.
Remember, 1 octave lower at the same output is 4x the excursion. The converse would be, if you high pass the lowest octave out of the L7 woofers, your maximum volume without exceeding xmax would increase dramatically. |

Yes you can. Ask Ken how many times he's done it. In fact, he could have easily sold me new midbass drivers to go with the other drivers I bought from him and HE suggested it to me. Also, listening to them, midbass is all they do well.

I agree that the hi-fi woofers are more than capable of midbass. The 6" base audio drivers, probably not so much.

Hi all, I have a quick question. Do I need spacers between the SWS and the speaker grill itself? My installer made custom ones for between the enclosure and the speaker but didn't put anything between the speaker and the grill. Reading other install threads it seems like I might need them but I'm not sure...

If your speaker is touching the grill/carpet I would put a spacer in...you can also just cut the carpet or leave the grill off.
I had mine folded back by making a few slits on the sides of the carpet and left the grill off. Just make sure nothing gets on top of the cone...it could damage it. |

I can get SSMB8's for ~160. Would this be preferable to a SWS8? (and as posted previously this is for a midbass solution with a Sub-Bass setup in the trunk. |

Are the SSMB8 drivers drop in as far as the OEM enclosures go or does it require slight modification?

Just traded my HiFi LCI E90 for one with Logic 7.
Believe I am toast in using the SWS-8xi's (2) ohms, so no go Up for sale they go. If anyone knows if I can keep them , please PM me.

I am not able to use these new SWS subs as I now have Logic7 and have read up that:
1. If I was to use them, I'd need 4ohm 2. The set up already in there (Logic 7) is pretty good, you're not going to get much more punch out of the Earthquakes True? I'd love to keep em' as they really woke up the HiFi system.

im confused then. will research more, before I list on these on the forum.
The earthquakes have to give some improvement to the L7, but I'm positive I read that the impedance needed to be 4 ohm. Thanks for your help though.

The factory woofer is a 4ohm woofer, however Earthquake released the SWS8-xi (2 ohm) to be a direct replacement for the factory systems.
I guess the amp puts out more power with a 2 ohm load and drives them properly? I know when we tried the 4ohm ones in mates car a few years back running of the L7 amp they were not loud enough, he ended up adding an amp to drive them properly. I know people who have put the 2 ohm ones in and run it off the L7 amp and said that it is fine, but I have never heard them. I would give it a go and see what you think. The Extremely Versatile SWS Subwoofers The SWS-8XI by Earthquake Sound features a mounting depth of 2-1/8". With a depth this small the applications for this woofer are endless. This shallow-woofer-system series subwoofer is perfect for those with limited space but that still want some bass in their car. This woofer is also the perfect replacement for factory upgraded systems, especially BMW vehicles. The woofer features a light weight resistant PVC cone and a long-lasting UV treated high-roll composite foam surround for added rigidity, stiffness, longevity and increase power output and performance. Don't let the size of the woofer fool you into thinking it's not powerful, with an Xmax linear excursion of 23mm this woofer will hit low-frequencies with accuracy and precision for a clean, crisp, and responsive bass reproduction. Although often imitated the SWS's 3 protected U.S patents assure that it's never duplicated. If you have 2.5" of space to spare then there is no other option than the SWS series subwoofer. Subwoofer Features: 8" Shallow Mount 2 Ohm Subwoofer Power Handling: Peak: 300 watts RMS: 150 watts Impedance: Single 2 Ohm Long lasting, UV treated high-roll composite foam surround Fits the factory BMW bolt pattern Perfect replacement for factory upgraded systems Easy 8" door-mount Easy under-seat mount First in-dash mount Excellent for rear-deck mounting 1.5" Voice coil Aluminum bobbin Mounting depth: 2-1/8" Xmax: 23.00 mm Sensitivity: 86.7 dB Authorized Internet Dealer 5-year Manufacturer's warranty [b]Note: The 2-Ohm SWS-8XI is for factory upgraded vehicles only.[b] |
