Yeah it all depends, one Christmas eve a couple years ago I was walking out onto Chestnut street and a car that was getting chased by the police almost took me out. I also have family that has lived there for years (i'm talking decades) and never had anything happen to them

I love how everyone thats worried about car theft and how dangerous Newark is dont actually LIVE in newark or never have.
For those that have and know the area well, we know its all hype and its not that serious in certain areas. Down neck... def worry about street parking. its the #1 reason why I refuse to look into that area even though I'm looking to get my own place right now. Other than that, the Forest Hill section of Newark is very nice, but those are all mostly 1 family houses. There are a couple of places where you can get a condo though.

this isnt a recent story, im going back to 2001.
my car was stolen in 15mins of it being parked. i was parked on komorn st. parked my car. went in to da bar around da corner. had a beer & 2shots. when i went back to my car it wasnt there. called da police. they said they couldnt do anything for me. i went to Andros Diner & there was about 10cops sitting @ da counter drinking coffee. police found it 5days later completely stripped in Irvington. people will double park next to your car for hours & not give a shit cuz U cant park newhere else & take into consideration dat car insurance is "MUCH" higher in dat area. to da OP. best of luck. personally i would find a place to live in 1 of da surrounding areas.

cops in Newark could care less about anything like a stolen car. Most of the time they wont even show up just to avoid the paperwork. sad, but very true.
as far as the double parking I never have to deal with it around my area. Its a lot calmer where I live. but again... to the OP, go with a surrounding town. even those all of those cops are a pain..

I would suggest commuting...there are plenty of towns nearby that are alot safer for you and your car. Newark has been getting alittle better but it's still Newark.

i currently live in newark and YES some parts are bad but the university heights area is ok and the ironbound. If you stay away from trouble you shouldn't have a problem. I am actually looking to rent out my apt to someone which is located in university heights in a nice area.. couple of bars within a block and also some food spots. There are also condos in society hill which is actually only a couple blocks from UMDNJ and has private parking with 24 hr security. A more expensive but probably the safest would be University Centre they have their own parking garage but the downside to the place is that since it is all college students there will be tons of partying and you will be assigned a roommate for a single room. IMO you should look into Society Hill. PM me if you have any questions will be glad to help you out

Why not consider Elizabeth, much nicer area and you'll be like 10 - 15 m away. Try N.Elizabeth, around Kean University area and you'll be good to go. Matter of fact, you can try the apartments and 707 N. Broad St. Nice apartments and super clean. They also have laundry on the first floor. I use to live there and miss it like crazy. Plus stop and shop, banks... everything is close.

A place with parking is a must. There are alot of new houses developing in the iron bound section. I hope you can speak portuguese and like big butts cuz its very brazilian and portuguese. I personaly hate taking my car to newark for a few reasons. 1. Parking it sucks in general 2. Potholes everywhere 3. There is parking in the lots but it can be expensive after a while. I wouldnt worry about your car getting stolen. Its to much work for these lil hoodrats to steal a BMW but your car may get vandalized. I love newark it has a lil bit for everyone!!!!

It's not to say that it can't be a decent place, (again, if you like that kind of food, it's a haven, and I LOVE brazilian women) but it comes with all the risks and stereotypes of such a place. Luckily, I never had any problems where I grew up, but I certainly wouldn't call it a nice place because of that. I know this thread is a bit old already, but if the OP is still out there, what did you decide as far as where to move? |

Have you spoken to any of your future colleagues at UMDNJ about where to live? I’d definitely get some recommendations from them. Have you considered finding a place in lower Manhattan and getting to work by taking the PATH train to Newark/Penn Station? UMDNJ is only about a mile from the station (via Market Street). Personally, I’d avoid living in Newark like the plague…

Thanks for all the great advice guys... I ended up just living on campus right next to the hospital... it's easy so I dont' have to commute to the hospital, and they have a secured parking garage for me to leave my car... protected from thugs and the elements
Where do you guys go for BMW Service? Bloomfield? Are they pretty good? How are they about mods?

I live in downtown Newark and go to BMW at Bloomfield for service...I've heard Park Ave is a little lenient with mods...it's just a little farther of a drive...I'm walking distance from that hospital

Funny I moved from Dallas back to NJ. The roads were okay until you PA to NJ. Welcome to Jerz. I'm a noob here so I have to hit up all these other spots for mods now.
