Where are the sensors located at ?? I guess it is not in the factory wheels becuase then upgrading to any aftermarket wheel would cause the speedo to not work ??

it's in the hub, behind the brakes. The hub of the car has a built in reluctor wheel, or toothed ring, and there's a magnetic sensor bolted on behind the brakes. It's either Hall Effect or Magneto-Resistive type, one at every wheel. there's also one at each end of the transmission, but that's for problem detection, NOT speedometer.

I thought the sensors on the wheels were typically used for the ABS. I guess I have a lot to learn about Bimmers

Glad you like your 3.63! Ive had mine for over a year, and it makes the car take off quite nicely, especially in traffic.

Note that the 3.63 diff has that tube coming out of the input shaft. You would need to remove this tube (angle grinder) to put it on a 325; the 325 driveshaft will not accept it with the tube.

The diff install in the E90 is a piece of cake compared to E46, which isnt that bad to begin with.

Uhaulball: you cannot change the diff in the E90 Xi. You would need to swap the front differential, and perhaps even the center diff (x-drive in the tranny) as well, or your front and rear wheels wont spin at the same speeds, wreaking havoc on your DSC/X drive.

Only problem I have with the 3.63 is if you want to be stupid and turn off DSC completely and launch the car; you will get a flat tire warning because the rotational wheel speeds difference between front and rear is beyond the limits of the computers settings.

How can you reset the flat tire warning? Will simply disconecting the battery fix this problem or is there more to it than that?

There's a flat tire RESET option, the same place where you set your DRLs, or you door unlock protocol, etc

So basically because I have a pre september 2005 build date my car will not let me reset the flat tire option? Is there a way to have that updated?

Oh gawd. You're right! Xi = two powered axles
. What was I thinking?

Yes, I do love the 3.64. The car feels much more comfortable at higher revs now. I've been surprised at how driveable the car still is both in the city and freeway.

Btw, since the 325i Step uses the 3.73 gears, it would make sense to use that in the 325i 6MT instead of the one I have.

hmmmm I wonder, is a 325xi rear diff compatible with my 330i step? I would like it to be, 3.64-3.91 would be cool. =)

You know Matt, I read those gear ratios out of realoem.com, but I cannot find any mention of the 3.91 in the BMW tech training materials. Is there any way you can confirm those numbers at work?

My electronic parts catalog, or ETK, shows me that the 325xi has a 43:11, or 3.91 ratio. It also shows me a 44:13, or 3.38, for the 6mt.

Matt,
I think you could use the rear diff, no reason why they should be different (you may have to swap input or output flanges, but the casing is the same.)

I went with the 3.63 just because i felt that the max ratio I could tolerate, although maybe in the 3.73 wouldnt be all that much different.

I already HAVE the 3.64, since I'm a 330i step, so a jump to 3.73 would be almost negligible, right?

Matt, if I'm not mistaken, some of the M3 owners have gone to 4.10 (?) gears. Could you find out if any of the gears or differentials are interchangeable?

I haven't been able to find out if you could put that diff in your car, Michael... I do know that you could always find/have made custom gearing, and replace the gears in the diff case.

WHAT? no.

If we change to anything with a HIGHER number than what is stock, (like changing my 3.64 to a 3.73) you will get LESS gas mileage, because you will cruise at a higher RPM.

Also, if you find a 4.73 diff that would fit our cars, you'd have a ROCKET SHIP that would top out at like 100mph! lol
