You should have been at the last meet....

Matt - 'Where is Cornwall anyway? When the icecaps melt, surely noone will notice when it gets swept away.... Rant, Rant, Rant, Cornwall, Rant, Rant...'

Tony - 'The new lad, Sean is from Cornwall'

Matt - 'Sigh. Fail'

No worries, but don't mock until you've tried you might be pleasantly surprised

Well, the roof honestly did fall to pieces.

On the other hand, as you will know, the old K series 127 bhp cars were all about the power to weight.... I could take about 15% of the power out of an Elise of that age, so I suspect I would still have been shortchanged by my own big ass.

An Exige though, still one I would like to try.

Depends Matt, mine has recently had a full induction kit fitted, a larger throttle body, full decat stage two sports exhaust, up-rated shocks and diffuser front and rear. Not the standard off the shelf S1, nor does it now drive like one.

I test ran an 04 Exige S before I got this S1, awesome speed & power but couldn't justify a £23K price tag for a car that I wouldn't fully exploit. The S1 cost me very little in-comparison, once I had paid the settlement figure off my M3 I had enough to buy the S1 outright, so for now it suits, but who knows in six months I will probably be sat in something else

oh dear, several M5's mids twenties (including a tourer under £30k with a horrible interior) and also a few M6's under £30k on AUC site. Even more BHP for your £££. You'd have to be pretty brave

I would honestly put the M3 in the "Hard to live with" league (the 6MT ones anyway). Don't get me wrong a great car and I feel very privileged to have owned one for over 18 months.
Interesting comments Marcus and always nice to hear from real life experiences.

Pros and cons as with most cars perhaps.

Knowing you now have the Lotus pocket rocket, has reminded me about the one and only time I've had a bit of a mini race with a Lotus, and this one was an Elise, June/July 2006 when I was test driving an E90 330i M sport that belonged to one of the salesmen at Astle BMW, Grimsby (and I was let out on my own), and of course I ended up buying one that Stratstone Hull had in the showroom.

There is a link there don't worry.

Forget M5's, more trouble than they're worth IMO.

No one's doubting it's engine note, just it's reliability.

+1

.....and people think M3's are 'potentially' expensive to own!!!

(and that crap gearbox will do your nut in after a few weeks/months)

I have driven both a saloon and touring, and whilst they were fast and sounded sublime, I couldn't help but prefer the M3.

M5 is great till the SMG goes and does you for 6k.

It will then be great again, until it does it again. In a months time.

I could easilly afford the purchase price but the running costs are terrifying. I briefly considered one but then did some research and very quickly changed my mind...

Dave.

The one I had a go in was 5 years old with 70000 miles on it and it hadn't missed a beat in 5 years....if i brought one it would be 2008 or 9 car so it's got it's warranty and I wouldn't keep it once the warranty had run out there is a 10 plate on the auc website with 1,200 miles for 64k it's a beaut!

Well I'd definitely get the '04 and put aside 10k for maintenance rather than a 10 plate! Extra 35k for the same car seems madness. Also. Imagine the residuals! That car is going to drop like an absolute bomb. It will be worth a quarter of that in 3 years... Third at absolute most.

If it's a 10 I guess its a touring? Thought they stopped all the others back in 08 or so.. Unless it just wasn't registered for a while?

Not sure if it is a 10 plate but it did say registered 2010 I think anyone would be nuts to buy it because like you said its values will drop like a stone.

There are couple of 08 cars with about 25,000 miles on for approx 36k - what a car for the money!!!

Me too. I drove one last year, and came close to signing. The running costs and potential depreciation really put me off. What a noise though!

Yes. I've had the pleasure of a very short drive in one. And have also passengered in several. Amazing cars. Pressing the M button, the seats dropping down and the side bolsters coming in. You just think.. "This is going to be special".

When the car is running right I'm not sure there's any car that could beat it for overall experience. The speed, the handling, the sheer aggression of the v10 and the Torque... Full stop.

So I'd have one with full warranty as a weekend toy. But daily driver without warranty? Not for me.

There is a reason the residuals are dropping so fast.. Sadly..

This is exactly what happened with me and the Maserati. Problem being I did the research after I'd bought it .

I too test drove an M5. A very very 'special' car that simply made you feel great driving it. Problem being the obvious things people have already highlighted and that gearbox.

I think also a car hs to be special everyday and if for any reason you feel uncomfortable with it because you're worried about reliability issues, it can soon sour the moment.

Predicatably I've been searching AUC for M5's (I'm sure this thread was originally talking about M3's ) and you'd need a straight jacket at the ready if you were to buy this...
