I need to look into this further.
This is the well known recirculate air function, not the same as REST (Residual Heat). Recirculate only cool down the interior (circulate air from outside to inside the car, without heating it up with the hvac system heat exchanger from coolant).

Dealers are reluctant to code your car, I asked and was turn down. Now I do my own coding.

That's true. I feel so lucky to have a great service department at my dealeship who used the instructions from here to code "REST" back into my car. They told me if when the winter is over that they'd make it "ALL" again

Not a stupid question. Really, you don't have a REST button but a ALL button. But you can have the ALL button works as a REST button after coding, see first post. It doesnt matters idrive or not.

I for one think that it is ridiculous that BMW would remove these features when they are so enjoyable and it is only a software "on and off" switch...just like mirrors fold with car door lock, speedo on the center display, and windows and sunroof close with FOB. Why isn't this included?!? They aren't even options you can PAY for but the car is more than capable of doing it.

What do you guys use to code your car?
What equipment do I need to code myself?
I know there is something called an OBD cable but where is the best place to purchase one?
I'm looking to enable the REST function in my e92xi lci however I also want my ALL function back for the summer and I don't want to be paying for someone else to code my car all the time.

Thanks for the help

Its not a trivial task, but you definitely can do it yourself, you should see the coding thread mentioned in the first post.

In short, you need a d-can USB cable (see the coding thread) and some software.

Yes! Everyone with ALL can have REST coded, but not the opposite.

So is it just heat? What about AC?
Just to clarify, this "rest" feature just has air circulation continuing after the car is off for 30 minutes? Is that it?
Because thats awesome!

Yes, that's correct. It also recirculates the cooling fluid (which should be hot), in order to provide the extra heat.
I think it will turn off after 15min, but not sure. Will test tomorrow.

Tested the thing. Coded REST_TASTE_VERBAUT in IHK module to aktiv and, after the engine warmed up a bit, i stopped the car and pressed the ALL button.
Ventilation started and kept working even as i left/ locked the car.

Neat finding, should come in handy in the winter time. Untill then, switched back to ALL.
Thanks again for sharing!
