I traded in the car. FYI, there is another member on hear who wrote a DIY guide to replacing the core....was more than I could handle (both time wise and skills). I wrote this 3 years ago and the thread was pretty much dead til about 3weeks ago...I have gotten several PM and posts regarding owners having the same problems. Good luck! (From what I remember the dealership wanted 2500 or so...anyone under warranty if you think u r having problems, get it replaced now, b4 it's too late.

I have just had the heater replaced in my E90 for the equivalent of $1000 by an indie. I do not wish that to anybody.
The service mentioned included: - Replacing all the heater box (not only the heater core). All the heater box was literally flooded by cooland leaking from the core. Several air blend doors were stuck and not moving properly, rendering the air conditioning useless and erratic. When I saw the car interior and dashboard virtually butchered to pieces I wept silently. It was like heart surgery on an infant to me. There are 3 types of heater box available for E90 so I was still quite happy they found the right used one at a reasonable price ($300) - The leaking coolant was dripping down the air duct to back right passenger well, so all the upholstery was removed to get rid of roughly 5 litres (sic!) of coolant accumulated on the car floor under the upholstery within the period of 3 months. Luckily the sub-woofers under the seats were intact. - The upholstery on the car floor was all removed, dried for two weeks and washed by Karcher cleaner to get rid of the moisture and coolant smell. - They luckily managed to put it all together quite nicely tight so I'm very happy with the service. The air conditioning works flawlessly now. The bottom line is this is probably the nastiest thing that can happen to your E90, and it's quite impossible to repair on your own (though there is one person in the thread that did it, i did not dare. Check this before you buy the car. Check the foot wells of both driver and passenger for any moisture, check if there is no liquid oozing from the vents and try to rev up the engine to make sure the smell is not appearing and the windscreen is not fogging from the inside. Thanks for this thread and cheers to all of you. |

Assuming that the leak is small, it won't hurt unless enough leaks to require more coolant (which will eventually happen). The passenger compartment will be flooded before that happens, though.

I'm very interested in this, I'm taking my car(2010 328i) in next week for a new heater core. It's under CPO warrant, which is great, but I still don't fancy having them completely dismantle the dash and interior. What I don't understand is that I purchased the car with 13,000 miles on it, now I have 28,000. I have flushed the cooling system this year with a 50/50 mix of BMW coolant and distilled water. Prior to that, the cooling system had never been serviced, so whatever it is being filled with from the factory is whats causing the heater core blockage.

My 2010 e92 335 has 30,000 miles and is on its third heater core. The original and replacement both clogged after about 15k miles. I hate this piece of shit. Both times, it was replaced under warranty despite the second time technically being out of warranty. A call to BMWNA cleared that up.
Now I'm dealing with a nice rattle in my dash on bumpy roads and it's making me hate my car. Our jester cores are pieces of shit and the labor to replace them is insane bc it's insanely hard to get to. Fuck BMW |

I think I have this problem in my e90 also. Its a 2011 with only 22k miles on it. I get a faint chemical smell through the vents after the car has been driven 10-15 mins and the heat doesn't work that well. The weird thing is, it (reportedly) passes a pressure test of the cooling system.
Is there anything else I can do to confirm that this is the issue? My dealer isn't really cooperating as "they can't smell it". I'll admit that I'm more sensitive to smells that your average person, but I don't know what else it could be. If I have to wait for it to get bad enough for *them* to smell whatever it is, I'll be way past warranty. |

If you are getting freezing temps on one side and hot on the other, I would bet the farm it is your core. Good luck
