Question about Vorsteiner VENTED Hoods and Rain

+1 on the optional vents closed open settings. if only we can adjust to close the vents while parked or during rainy days.

Here's a picture of the OEM hydraulic struts. Notice how they're connected to the hinge and not the hood panel. This avoids putting pressure directly on the hood panel. This also means that the hood opens to a higher position. Seems to provide more access to the engine bay, which may be a good thing. The picture below was taken with the hood fully open and supported only by the hydraulic struts. As for the vents, my hood is fully vented. I wouldn't worry about water exposure for the engine bay. Just use common sense. (i.e. don't allow water to be forcefully sprayed directly through the vents.) I've had the hood for about 3 weeks and haven't had any problems with the engine bay getting dirty or extremely wet. Check out the pic again....this is after 2 rainstorms and 2 exterior washes over the last 3 weeks.

btw got few questions regarding the material,are the vorsteiner hood made by PUR or just fiberglass?cause my car color is silver grey.just being scared abit when the bodyshop paint it.cause the material are totally different from the OEM hood.

is there any chances the color will not be the same?

The hood is available in 2 materials: dry vacuum woven plastic and carbon fiber. My hood is DVWP with carbon fiber vents. Regarding paint matching, this is going to depend on your body shop. My recommendation to you is to get a good body shop. A good body shop should be able to match paint, regardless of material.

Yes Iam totally 100% with you.but again even good proffesional or best bodyshop told me before that the materials like front bumper,rear bumper or vorsteiner hood are totally different materials from the rest of the body.
get what I mean? plastic,pur,or GPFRP compare to steel will be not the same.
iam jsut being scared thats all.

we cant tell if the car color is black..hardly seen.expecially the silver color.it will be noticeable.
what do you think?

I purchased the double sided carbon fiber version. Supposedly there is a considerable difference in weight when compared with the OEM hood. I'm concerned that when opening the hood the shock make cause the hood to fly up. They must be valved specifically to work with the weight of the hood. Did you notice any difference while opening the hood?

Are you going to paint it? I have been waiting to see someone in a Montego who has this hood for a long time ad didn't want to be the first one. Please take pics when you get it so we can see how good the contrast is with the CF

Painting the top, except for the vents. I am also getting the Vorsteiner front lip molded to my new Mtech kit.

Yes, the hood does open quicker now because it's lighter. When opening, I normally hold the hood and counter act the force from the struts in order to avoid having it open too rapidly and then bounce when it's fully open. I try not to let the hood open under full force of the struts.

I know what you mean about different materials. However, remember this: the front fenders on all E92s are fiberglass or plastic and front bumpers on all E9x's are plastic or some other poly material. Bottom line, just make sure your body shop is known for their paint work. My car is black sapphire metallic and the paint matches perfectly. The only give-away that the hood is not aluminum is the carbon fiber vents.

Thanks. I figured that would be the case. I would remember to hold the hold but others won't, such as when the car goes into BMW for service. My hood is even lighter than yours(I think) so it would be even more of a problem for me. Maybe I can use shocks from another BMW model car, one that had a smaller hood. I would think the valving would be different.

Sounds good. You might want to try the struts from an E60. The body shop tech mentioned that he's used those on an E46 M3 Vorsteiner hood previously with good results. If you manage to find some struts that open softer than the OEM ones, let me know. I might end up swapping mine out.

from lookin at a buddy's hood recently w/ closed vents, i think teh water would jsut run off the hood.it just goes around the vents in that case.

ya i get little puddles in the vents, but as soon as i drive then its all clear

i saw a e46 once that had hard plastic inserts for the Open vents. they were made by Vorsteiner i think too!

Here's a pic that might give you more confidence. I believe this car belongs to member "Walked U". Not sure what material he chose for the hood. Keep us posted on the results.
