Hi, did they change anything on software, or is it original with no revs up at setting off? Any luck with sparepart numbers? Thanks

Sorry, I forgot to ask for part numbers. I will do though.

Talking of software, I did notice something odd. I don't know if it did this before but...

I'm in traffic crawling along. So clutch is down while I'm stood and then up again and a little gas as I move forward. As the traffic stops again my foot goes down on the clutch again and off the gas. But looking at the economy gauge it continues to hover around the 50mpg mark, drops down to 30mpg, hangs there for a few seconds and then goes to the 'infinity' end of the gauge. All this while my clutch is fully down and no gas. Odd.

Anyhoo, I can report that whatever they've done it's perfect. The clutch feels much more responsive (almost like they've removed the CDV ), the grinding has gone already and there is certainly no judder whatsoever. I'm finally driving without having to work around most gear changes and as I said to my dealer when they rang, I can be as lazy as I like.

Hopefully things will stay this way.

Just ask for the pro-forma invoice to be posted to you when they claim for the warranty repairs. It will give zero values for all parts and labour, but will atleast give you the part numbers. I have just done this for my recent timing chain issue that required the engine and gearbox out. About to do the same for the further 6 new injectors they claim to have changed since the initial warranty claim!

Hi, really glad that they have found a solution. A proforma invoice would be perfect.

I'll let you know about this. I pay no attention to the shift indicator though. In fact it's the first thing I turn off when I get in a BMW.
Its not really related to the shift indicator, just ironically I shift 'naturally' when the shift indicator says to most of the time.

You noticed any engine/clutch vibration felt on the clutch pedal when pressing down between 2,000-3,000rpm during changes so far?

Glad its going well so far, look forward to mine. Might pester my dealer next week...

Unfortunately my dealer was unwilling to give any detail regarding invoices, part numbers etc. Sorry about that.

After further driving today I am wondering if software has played a part in this. There's the odd economy guage behaviour I mentioned the other day plus the revs seem to pick up a little if I'm being a bit lazy with the clutch right around where it used to judder.

Couldn't care less either way, it's still driving well

Did your previous one have a bit of this or was it only juddering. I hope this new one cures this pedal vibration I have. Its only felt on your foot like a slight buzz for a split second but is damn annoying

I don't think BMW dealers have permission to give out part numbers unfortunetely. My dealer always refuses. You could try check on RealOEM perhaps?!?

Thanks anyway. Hopefully judder will not return. Please keep us posting further on. Mine is at the moment a bit better because the temperatures are below zero.

It's been a week and a couple of hundred miles of mainly town driving so I thought I'd give you an update.

No judder.

Another week and still no judder. I think this has now been resolved.

Anyone out there with this issue, get it sorted!

So what do we need to do to get it sorted? New clutch? Software? What do I say to my dealer?

They should be aware that there is a modified clutch assembly available for owners who have reported this problem before. I believe software is involved (just my guess, how the car drives leads me to this conclusion) but the main point is it's a revised clutch.

So how bad was your clutch? With mine I have to be really careful with revs else it judders or sometimes if i give it too much throttle it shoots off and then the engine seems to die which is equally bad. I have never had any trouble in any of my other cars apart from my previous e90 which was just as bad.

It was bad. To the point where I'd dread a trip across town in rush hour. Working around or trying to work around the judder was a real chore. The clutches on these cars aren't light to start with but spend an hour in traffic attempting to avoid the judder and you really feel it. Hill starts were a nightmare and on the few occasions I had to reverse uphill the car would shake badly.

One of the other things to consider is that in the back of your mind you wonder if it's you and not the car. It doesn't matter how long you've been driving or what you've driven before, the doubt is there. Well I've got the modification and I certainly haven't changed my driving style but I can say the problem has gone away.

Regarding my other moan, the dashboard noise. I did wonder which problem pissed me off the most. It was certainly the clutch. I will track the noise down eventually but at the moment I can live with it because at least the car drives well now.

My X1 is in today to be sorted, so fingers crossed.

We were lent a 118i and what a lovely car it is to drive in comparison to ours, the clutch is an absolute joy, it is so light it actually makes driving a manual a pleasure, unlike the effort that is our X1.
I am now not sure if our car is faulty or if the clutches on the diesels are just horrible?

If the X1 comes back and still feels a heavy piece of shit I will be getting rid of it, judder or not.

Any more updates guys?

I've been enduring the judder since I last got dealers to look at it (back in March) at which point they couldn't make the car do it.... Querys with Alpina UK at the time didnt seem to get anywhere either...

Its due in for a service so will be flagging up again as it can be really bad on hill starts as rich observed...

PS rich - the mpg meter thing happens on all BMWs!
