What color? It's very important that you used the correct color, or else the oil color monitor will malfunction and throw a shadow code in the ECU. This code can only be cleared by BMW's CEO, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, using his personal version of the GT1. It's a VERY expensive process; your car has to be shipped to the BMW Welt to have Dr. Reithofer clear the code. I've recently read that Bavarian Tech is working on a software update to have the code owner-clearable (but it will only be in the professional version of the BT Scan tool).

Oh, and did you perform the extra curing process for the plasti-dip? It's 2 hours in the kitchen oven at a temp of 173.3 degrees F.

This is crazy. The colour is how you judge the viscosity of oil? LOL. Hey change your oil when you want....it is simply varying degrees of wasted money. For me, I feel better changing it every 12000kms or approx 6 months. Given there is literally no proof of BMW engines crapping out on the schedule they provide what the hell are we arguing about here? I do a change half way in between the recommended change out of shear fear, uncertainty and doubt......and yes I can afford an extra $140 a year.

This is precisely the issue. Facts vs. fear and uncertainty. The facts are BMW engines run perfectly fine with CBS 15K OCIs, don't wear out at 100K miles and that Blackstone Labs UOA on BMW 15K mile OCIs show the oil to be fine for additional service. None of this should be a surprise. BMW isn't in the warranty replacement engine business.

Dealerships are independently owed like most if not all other brands. So, like other brands, there is always a chance that a dealership could use another oil. Since most oil changes performed by the dealers are under free maintenance there may be some sort of inventory system setup between BMW and the dealership. Who knows or cares imo.

I change oil after 3-4k but I have a different engine and probably working on my car anyways. But with that said, if your oil degrades after 5K you are running a shitty oil. Newer oil should not have 'less' debris. The filter is there for a reason.

I can't, but I assume you are changing your transmission and diff fluid along with coolant and power steering every 5K too?

Engine oil filter will not catch all debris and over time even the best oils breakdown. You are correct though - I change all fluids at a greater interval than factory recommendations. When was the last time a dealership gave you advise that was actually in your best interest?

The maintenance is not passed from the dealer, it's passed from engineers. If it was dealership's call you would be back in for fluid changes every month.

My car - My $$, absolutely nothing wrong with more frequent fluid changes than what is recommended from the engineers that are paying for my car and any related engine issues. :roll eyes:

Every oil thread has to end with name calling, we need a new section just for oil.

It can start with a disclaimer covering allowed names and acceptable profanity, all with an under 18 clause.

Can have its own emoticons too, I suggest: bathing in oil, cooking in oil, throwing oil at each other and one confused happy face taking his oil in for analysis.
