Most of the one I've seen looks like smaller version of a radar detector (with a screen attached), and does not look like the "BlackVue DR400G-HD" in previous post.

Thought about getting one when I was there, just didn't know where to get one.

I think it's a good investment, for crooked cops, accident, etc., I mean for $150 bucks it's a steal for what it can do!
Dude...$150 for this in Taiwan? Trust me, full professional install....$75 can get the job done!
Damn the taxi driver I was talking to must've gotten ripped off lol!

I went from an older (cheaper) version of this one
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/ca...-recorder.html

To this one that has the GPS/rear view camera
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/vo...ps-logger.html

Nice thing about the former is you could use the built-in LCD to aim and review the footage. Both take SD cards, but I use a Micro-SD card in an SD-card adapter so I can pop-out the mini just in case someone tries to 'forcibly confiscate' the bigger card. They just get a shell

When I had mine installed, they installed the cam behind (from driver's perspective) the rearview mirror. The wire is routed upwards to the headliner so the only wire visible is only about 3 inches long from the headliner directly down to the camera. Clean and easy.

What is going to make the GoPro even better is when they release the WiFi remote:

That parking mode on the Blackvue has me sold. I would like to use my go-pro since its just sitting in my room, but I think the value is in the park mode.

Yup, its called a galaxy nexus and a million times more useful than a video camera.. think software for what you can do... u can have it run and have an option to delete footage automatically when you exit the car..

thats not bad since it is better than what a go pro can do. i still dont think its a proper substitute for a real dash cam that continuously overwrites the files when it hits the max memory limit though

Cameras like GoPro and Contour HD are intended to be used for "creative" purposes. Get them if you are thinking about youtubing and stuff like that.

But if you are interested in dashboard cam as a "black box recorder" for insurance purposes, then GoPro and stuff like that are far from being the right choice. Using a GoPro for that is like keeping a Canon 1D in your glove box just to take pictures in case of an accident. There are quite a few packaged solutions sold specifically for that purpose, including multi-cam ones. They are relatively inexpensive and work very well.

I'd say that the biggest problem is not choosing the right camera, but rather complying with the local laws. In USA you can end up in jail for taping a "wrong" thing at the "wrong" moment. (The relatively recent cases with people arrested for taping police officers come to mind.)

That's why I'm saying my solution is better than a go pro there are apps that turn it into a dashcam overwriting upon an action you choose..say Bluetooth disconnects then it pops up a message saying keep or delete.. now its even better than a dash can because you can record GPS coordinates tied to specific times of a clip or capture speed.. the possibilities are endless.. its software!

I want to know these cases as well. Arrested for video taping the police? Really?? I wonder if the person who taped the Rodney King beating has been released from prison yet???

what do you guys think of using these dashboard cams instead of go-pro for recording auto-x or tracking? Dual purpose - record track videos + record street videos

I don't see a reason why not.
