The bolt pattern is all the same for BMW but the offset differs.

No its not - the offsets vary from rim to rim. The wrong rim with the wrong offset could lead to rubbing issues or worse still handling issues.

Rim diameter also plays a part - tyre size needs to accomodate the change in diameter -ie larger rim - lower profile tyre.

just like what i have now i have teh same rolling diameter as i used to have, yet i am on 19s now rather then 17s

Exactly - you have lower profile tyres too! Also means you bought wheels which had the right "offset".

Im interested in doing my wheels & going for non-runflats but figure Mr Murphy will most likely show up as soon as I do with a big nail.

Is there an aftermarket space saver available??

Probably need to carry one of these puncture repair kits, a jack and a 12v compressor. Takes a lot less space than a spare wheel. I used them a couple of times on my 911 (now sold) with good results. The spacesaver on the Porsche was crap and plugging a tyre was quicker than inflating and fitting the stupid spacesaver. Can get similar kits at Supercheap!

I have just replaced my 17 inch continental RFT with Pirrelli PZeros non-RFT. The difference is huge. So much quieter and and ride is a a lot smoother.

On long journey, I carry a spare wheel (which is the original RFT) in the boot with a jack and tools. I thought puncture repair kit would be a great idea, I will look for it at Supercheap tomorrow.

I had about 6500Ks on the RFT conti's. They came from the dealer since new. They still have a lot of tread on them: at least 60%. The conti treadwear rating is 280 so much higher than bridgestone re050 (140) and pirelli Eufori (180).

I went to dealer last weekend, I can see new BMW now comes with Dunlop RFT (523i) and Michelin RFT (335i Sport). Seem like BMW keep on switching its tyre suppliers.

I got the Perelli Pzero Rosso from ebay. They are used but still got plenty of tread 80%. They are manufactured in 2005 so they are not too old. Got them for $100 each.

No I got the used alloy for $355..

There is a very interesting deal at ebay at the moment:
Brand new original BBS 18inch starting from $990* I reckon it is a good deal. But I dont have the budget to spent on wheels at the moment.

I've seen this listed over the last 2 - 3 weeks ... very tempting but I really want to go to 19". not sure how they would look on my car or the offset they have from memory.

Good finding about the offset, I think 45 offset wouldnt fit e90. It is more for 5 series or 7 series.

I reckon if you replace the 17 RFT with 19 non-RFT, the latter would still offer a better comfort and lower noise level.

Hi,

I'm looking at changing my wheels to the Star Spoke 179's from BMW (want to keep the car looking fairly original with BMW accessories where possible), pic attached.

Now the wheels fit a 225/35 r19 at the front and a 255/30 r19 on the rear.

Question is do I go for runflats or normal rubber?

What brands are people using?

Comments from people that have perhaps changed the original rubber on their standard rims for non-runflats.... what differences did you get?

Car came with Double Spoke 161's and these only have 3500km on them, any ideas as to potential resale value (need to make the Mrs happy about the $$ I am spending)?

Nice wheels. There are a lot of pro and cons about RunFlats. So you need to weight according to your situation.
Runflats are safer (bmw called safety tyres) as you do not have to worry about flat tyre for 250kms on max 80kph. But they are noisy and bumpy on rides. Imagine you are at somewhere between Alice Spring and Darwin (which probably you wont).

Non runflats are more comfortable and some argue it handles better. But you need to worry about flat tyres. As bmw do not provide space for spare tyre, if you carry one it would take up a large amount of your boot space.
Other option include puncture repair kit as explained above, but you need to bring a pump, and tools to take out the punctured wheel.

Other option: emergency sealant, you can just pump it direct from the canister into the tyre valve, it will self seal the leak. But you can only drive upto 50Kph. With limited distance.

I use Pirelli Pzero Rosso non runflats on mine. The ride is so much quieter and comfortable. Bridgestone RE050 also comes as non runflats, there are a lot of good review on the non runflats.

Regarding the 161, Typical 17inch with new/near new tyres sells between $1500 - $2000 on ebay. You dont get a lot value if you sell them at those price. Why dont you keep them, when you sell your car put the 161 back in.

CK's are an e90 rim, just like the CH was an e46 rim...

and IMO 19's just plain look better then 18's... the roads around my area are shocking, and i don't find the ride on 19's too harsh, not THAT much different from 17's
