It all depends on the bodyshop and how close a match they can manage. After having a small dent in the passenger door of the E46 done the only way I could tell how much they had painted to blend in (about half the side of the car) was when I washed it as the freshly painted section wasn't beading like the rest of the car. A couple of coats of Zymol though and you really can't tell that anything was done. In daylight or artificial light you can't see a difference.

If you want to see close parking then you should have been on the ferry I came back from the Isle of Man on last night. They get you to unload all you passengers before you pull into the final parking position as they would not be able to get out. I was parked so close to a car on one side that our wing mirrors overlapped and he had to get back in through the passenger door. That left me about 4" of clearance to the van on the other side to get out through. Unloading is then a ballet of shuffling cars back and forth to gain enough room to turn for the exit.

Next year the ferry will be chosen even more carefully.

you need to sit back and see the bigger picture, in reality then would hav painted the door and maybe gone into the wings, they sometimes if they do not replace the door only paint a small section.. even then sometimes this can appear as a slighty discoulered patch

i promise you it wont be 100% it never can be, paint ages even in short time and also when your car was painted 6 months before you picked it up. the paint is a different batch that gets painted onto your car

if you want i can post pic of a bmw after a bmw bodyshop paint and have look yourself

in some lights its hardly noticeable other its awful

if i saw your cars, without even kowing you i could tell quite easily

as much as you would like to think it looks factory, im afraid it isnt
That's me told then...

now my mother might buy your car one day (for example) and never notice any difference in colour, i would not even buy a car which has ever had any paint....

i would find another car

How many people have you special 'gift' Carl?

Obviously my eyes don't work properly because I checked my car earlier and all the panels are definitely black.

I'm seriously wondering now if everyone knows my car is 2 different colours and they are just not saying.

NFS, I for one would have told you your panels just weren't what they used to be, but, for some strange reason, I just haven't needed to!

That's because you don't have the 'shining'

Only Carlos can discern the difference between 'black' and 'black'.

Frachise bodyshops are shit, beacuse they get thacham times to work to. And earn bonus's by doing it quickly, and the quality takes a hit. Best go to a private or family run bodyshop

I think some pictures can tell a lot more than a thousand words!

No offence Carlos, but I'm only depicting what a lot of other members are thinking.

Flame away- I'm ready for it!

I’m really trying to understand if there is some deep underlying primitive instinctive need for people to park next to someone else – strength in numbers, safety etc…? Do they subconsciously see that my car could be in danger being all alone by itself! Or is it just the case of some a**hole doing it on purpose just to wind you up?

Why, why, why does this happen, when all around you there could be dozens and dozens of other empty parking spaces that they could have chosen to park in, they choose the one right next to you!!!

Totally bemused…

+10000 man. there could be a HUGE empty parking lot. you pick the furthest point to park away from other cars. you come back in a minute to see someone parked really close to you! drives me nuts

I always park a bit futher away and there's always damned sheople that park right next to it. Happens nomatter what car I drive, even old bangers.

It must be a subconscious thing, but I've never done it.

> No, I don't have kids yet, but do you know what? WHEN I do I'll simply take care in removing them from the car, it's as simple as that!

When you're getting a kid out of a seat, you can't stop the door from banging into the car next to you if the spaces aren't wide enough. Even if you're careful, kids are unpredictable and it doesn't take much to get you out of balance and bump into the door.

I have a piece of foam insulation in the trunk which I push over the door edge to prevent denting or scratching the other car should there be contact, but I've *NEVER* seen anyone else do this. (People just aren't smart enough to come up with something as brilliant as that on their own)

These special wide parking spaces for parents with kids are fantastic and you should lynch anyone using them that doesn't have kids because that increases the likelihood of your car getting dented by someone with kids forced to park in a narrower spot.

if someones does open their door etc and dents your car, do you have a case to claim on their insurance?

happened to me a few times, but i let it go. with the 335i i certainly wouldn't.

a few years back i was at a roundabout and the car ahead of me (old nissan blueshit) broke down, the lady driving was on the phone, so of course i was looking to the right and just managed to stop in time, well i think there was contact but so minor it was like two feathers touching.

Anyone she was on the mobile at the time - denying it of course. we exchanged insurance details etc - i was a fool to give them to her.

her car was so battered anyway it was a joke, cant see how it passed the MOT (doubt it did)

my insurance company called a number of hours later to inform me of a claim from her insurance company. i am not joking but she claimed over 5 grand in whiplash injures and her car needed 2k worth of repair!!!!

god - i am just too honest!

in the interim i have been hit twice buy two uninsured drivers and have suffered the excess etc and taking the hit on my policies.

if it happens again i will call the police i think - i doubt they would be interested. as i understand that the two people that hit me, were not pursued be my insurance company.

I park anywhere, dont worry about my cars being stolen or scracthed, because my worry wont stop it happening.

If it gets damaged or stolen then ill claim on my insurance.

I worry about my family, and my wonderful baby boy and thats about it.

They're cars nothing else.
