Check out this feature in your Control Panel.
Just done this - fantastic option - threads now look more 'grown up' exactly what I was after..

Yep ... it's a distinction the americans make.

In the UK 'beemer' is fine for a bike or a car.

I have been thinking about this some more over the weekend and have the following thoughts.

E46 330d Sport was far more perky (and faster) but it did have 80,000 miles under it's belt when sold (in May), so maybe it benefitted from the mileage.

E39 523i SE - this felt like a luxo barge - great to drive over distance, supremely comfortable etc etc. Sold with 180,000 miles on it still fit for many thousands more. (Wife's car)

E46 323i SE - This had sports seats and suspension and the 2.5 litre petrol engine - again when sold it had 80,000 plus miles - great car.

Your comments about the runflats (this seems a common theme) making the ride skittish make sense - I can't quite feel confident round favourite corners yet.

I think that with (as you say) the extra mileage the engine will feel better - this make sense comparing my older BMs.

I think because the E91 is a bigger car than the E46 it also feels a little less wieldy maybe?

Re: Other comments about chipping and changing wheels / tyres - I'd sooner change the car than mess around like this. I used to tinker with motorbikes a while ago - mostly two-strokes - and whenever anything was changed too far from the manufacturers tried and tested recipe it usually resulted in a compromise that manifested itself in a long push home (more often than not in the rain!). Also when buying a second-hand car I would avoid anything 'modified' myself and know (family business) that the general public do also.

Thanks for the comments.
My feeling is that the e46's - especially the coupe's feel very sharp in comparison to the e90.

I went from an e46 coupe to an e60 then back to the e90.

The refinement is WAY better than the e46, but it feels like a bigger, heavier car.

But .... once you have the confidence the chuck the e90 into a corner, you realise that it is just as pointy as the e46.

As weight, refinement and safety features have increased in modern cars some driving feel has been lost.

I drove my 1.6 Ford Cortina sideways for the majority of the time, it was daft fun really, more handling than grip.

A lot of this is also down to the fashion for big wheels. I had 185 tyres on my cortina, but I think it originally came with 135's.

But my e90 has 255's on the back. That's a lot more contact patch and a lot more grip.

As a responsible adult that's a good thing.

This is why things like caterhams are still around.
