Now thats surprising, the diesel maintained 43% of its value whereas the petrol 45% (in your experience)...I thought one of the major advantages with diesel is the fact that they are supposed to hold value better

You have to compare like with like. All cars loose a bigger percentage when newer. The petrol was a lot cheaper so had already lost a big chunk of its value

You do have to compare cars of a similar age in terms of depreciation. Buying 3yrs old and selling at 6 is always a lot better than buying new and selling at 3 regardless of fuel type.
