I think i'll miss the ability to ring the cars neck along back-roads and still see 50mpg. Thats certaily something people forget when they calculate running costs. Driving even modest petrols in such a way has always resulted in horrific mpg.
If I drove my old 3.0 Z4 or my old MK5 Golf GTI 2.0 turbo hard I would see no more than 22mpg, driving my 3.0 diesel just as fast i still get over 40mpg
Quite a difference when you do 70 miles a day

Now thats surprising, the diesel maintained 43% of its value whereas the petrol 45% (in your experience)...I thought one of the major advantages with diesel is the fact that they are supposed to hold value better

You have to compare like with like. All cars loose a bigger percentage when newer. The petrol was a lot cheaper so had already lost a big chunk of its value

Thats my point, and why petrol v diesel isn't so clear. The 330d was an ex demo when I bought it, the 335i was almost 3 years old when I bought it. Lower running costs overall with a thirstier better sounding but older car. ( 26 mpg v 36mpg)

You do have to compare cars of a similar age in terms of depreciation. Buying 3yrs old and selling at 6 is always a lot better than buying new and selling at 3 regardless of fuel type.
