Police need quicker cars to make up for the power to weight ratio affected unduly by doughnut consumption ... it is only right they get M5's ....

Indeed.

Although my service (and I suspect most others too, for H&S reasons) has a standing order that any vehicle responding to an emergency call must use lights and sirens at all times. No exceptions.

The Met Police doesn't ... but it is usually patently obvious when one should use them ! Those who don't get taken to the cleaners ... and it is obviously their own driving licence on the line ... and potentially their job.

Was going to mention the Tonight program, tommorrow.
Unfortunately at the moment, the CPS are determined to prosecute in a variety of circumstances, leading to a real fear amongst officers-R v Holden and Lynch being two different examples and both leading to not guilty verdicts.
Unfortunately, damned if we do,damned if we don't and I think that the public and political pressures that are going to be faced by the new PCC's will make it even more difficult for those on the ground.

Several years back, I was in a response car en route to a 999 call. Warm, dry summer night, about 0300. I had maybe a 10 minute drive to get to the address, and I was pushing it - but I knew the car and the roads well, I was well within my limits. I misjudged a corner and clipped the kerb, blew the tyre on that wheel. Felt like a prize dick, but these things happen. I called up, arranged recovery, and sat back in the car listening to late night radio.

5 minutes later a police car rolled up. Very friendly officer, we had a chat and he understood exactly what had happened. He explained that someone had made a complaint about my driving, which I was suprised about given the time of night and the fact I hadn't seen another car. Anyway, 3 months later I was in court in front of a judge, charged with DWDCAA. The 'witness' who had seen it all from her bedroom window claimed that not only had I mounted the kerb and nearly hit a pedestrian with a baby in a pushchair, but that she'd seen me and my colleague in the car.

Despite this being a complete lie for a number of reasons:

1. The police investigation categorically stating that I had NOT mounted the kerb because the tyre marks proved it,
2. The fact I was on my own in the car,
3. That is was 3am and there were no pedestrians, paticularly ones with pushchairs,

It was enough to get me into court, and the simple fact that I'd hit the kerb was enough for the CPS to prove their case. Only a plea from the union-provided barrister kept the points and fine down to less than maximum. HR and service management were a bunch of tossers - as far as they were concerned I was on my own, and if I should happen to lose my license, well, tough shit, and as a license was a condition of employment I'd also lose my job.

My license is clean again now, but since then I have slowed right down. I absolutely won't make any kind of effort for a service that won't back me for making a simple mistake. I know a lot of others have adopted the same attitude too.
