Ohlins R&T spring rates

Good point regarding the rear spring rates.

I've vascillated back and forth numerous times, and would definitely try Ohlins spring rates in rear if majority of time was spent on public roads, and less than smooth race circuits. I've driven on the Nurburgring numerous times, and would definitely prefer a softer spring setup given how rough it is. However; our home track is The Ridge, which is a fairly new track, tarmac is 40 ft. wide, and newly paved. Other local tracks include PIR, Oregon Raceway Park, Pacific Raceways, Spokane, and Thunderhill. I'm concerned that the rear may understeer or potentially bottom out with such low spring rates.
This is our families daily driver; yet also needs to keep up in the advanced lapping group, with R-compound tires and race pads.

I went with 672 lb. rear springs and very happy with them. Not too harsh with proper damper settings. Actually rides much better than OEM sports package. You could always keep the front kit springs and just replace the rear springs if you are concerned about the rear spring rates.

Thumbs up Ohlins R&T spring rates

Thanks for the helpful input

Harold from HP Autowerks set me up with the 336 Ohlin springs up front with 672 Swift in the rear, Vorshlag camber plates, and thrust sheets. Harold also strongly recommended the M3 control arms.

My only concern is keeping the camber street tire friendly, as this doubles as our commuter, and I'm running a staggered street setup and not able to rotate. Trying to achieve less than or equal to 1.25 degrees negative with 10mm drop, then be able to gain enough camber at the track to achieve 2.5 degrees negative.

Will post a review as soon as I've had a chance to log miles on road & track.

^ You might want to talk to Ohlins about using rear springs that are 250-300 lbs stiffer than what their rear shocks were valved to dampen. There's a thread somewhere in this forum where someone mentioned a conversation with an Ohlins rep who stated they'd recommend revalving the rear shocks if increasing the rear spring rate significantly.
Love riding Moab slickrock btw

Good point about the revalving. Harold felt confident the rears didn't need revalving with the 672's. He mentioned he has customers which have run the stiffer springs for a couple years with no issues, not to say revalving wouldn't be ideal. I'll see how they hold up after commuting & track duties.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy the slickrock soon!

I've been running 400/800 springs with my olhins since 2010 and no issues. I had asked olhins customer support about revalving and he had said it was not required provided the spring height and the shock travel distance was the same, if that makes sense.

Did you mean to say revalving was "not" required if spring height/travel was the same?
Also, how is your combo on the street?

Would the ohlins kit amaze me a lot more than the BMW PS kit and Bilstein kits? As in out of this world?

Also, at the moment i have found only 2 kits for the E9X. The E90 one and the E92 M3, which was released this month. Would the standard E90 kit be ok for my E92 335D?

BMW PS and Bilstein is no comparison for the Ohlins R&T, especially the BMW PS.

Yes, the 335 R&T would be the one for you.

That's good to know as i'd hate to buy a kit and then feel its not giving me as much of an improvement as i had expected.

So are you saying the E90 R&T kit will be ok with my E92 335D?

Cheers mate. Just wasn't too sure as we don't have an Ohlins E92 option here in the UK (apart from the new M3 one)

Anyways from what you're saying, the standard E90 one will be perfect

OOPSS. yes, thats what i meant to say.

the combo is actually very good! I wasnt sure how i'd like it on the roads up here in Vancouver Canada as its absolute crap surface but its surprisingly very comfortable. Even better than stock. Mind you, i run 19" rims on the Conti DWS so softer sidewalls but very compliant.

Is it possible to order a custom order of 335i front R&T's and M3 rears?

I'm just in the middle of either going for a wavetrac diff centre upgrade along with m3 subframe bushes links etc, or just replacing the entire rear end with an m3 item...

You probably need to contact your local distributor and see if they can work with you. In general, I think it's going to be difficult for them to mix/match units, since it appears that the distributors get the complete kits intact from Öhlins HQ.

I need to post my own personal update: I LOVE my Öhlins Road & Track! I just came off a quick 600 mile round trip, and it's difficult to understate the improvement these units make in the car. For me, the more I drive with them, the more I recognize their understated improvement in the behavior of the car - particularly the improvement in absorbing minor bumps and making the ride silky smooth, while not really giving anything away under more demanding driving conditions. Truly a purchase that is well worth the money!

No, they are not available as a custom oder. However, they are available as replacement components. M3 rears will likely not be available until May.

The Ohlins R&T M3 fronts look like they come with sleeves, so probably without the sleeves they might fit the non-M 3 series.

No, they won't fit as there is no stop for the strut.
