I'm at 78k on mine, no issues yet. Sticking with chevron diesel for the most part. Thinking about trying this no name place near me that's like 30 cents cheaper ...maybe i should stay away?!

I've used Chevron too. Not sure if that make any bit of a difference or not.
A few trips to Vegas this year revving up the engine didn't really help in keeping it clean.
I do a lot of city driving though, many stop lights, low RPM, short trips.

Can you elaborate a little on how you revved the engine going to Vegas?

Lot's of times the pedal was all the way down. Uphill passing other cars.

most of the time while passing I would shift it in DS. Better response, reduced lag.

FWIW I am keeping the car in DS at all times when NOT on the highway.

It keeps the revs and turbos spooled up and reduces lag.

Fuel economy suffers.

Fun economy benefits.

My car has been in the shop for 81 consecutive days...BMW has determined over the phone that there is excessive carbon build up. 43k miles...do they really think $5k is acceptable for a customer to pay (every 40k miles) once warranty is up?

How are class action lawsuits started?

2011; I believe around June, I've owned it since Nov 2011.

I've talked to BMW NA, the service director, and the sales manager...who has been in contact with the BMW regional management. I have a feeling I'm not going to agree with their "ownership solution"...I certainly didn't agree with their initial market value.

My car is STILL in at the dealership. After having the cylinder head cleaned at a machine shop, they are apparently waiting for an intake manifold from BMW Germany and BMW is waiting for this part from their manufacturer. According to the service guy, there are over 100 diesels in need of this part. I hope most are not grounded. The upside is that I have been driving their loaner for the past 2.5 months in the winter...... I'm starting to think this part is never coming in though......

I posted this in another thread. My SA called today to say that the intake supplier can not obtain the necessary materials to manufacture new intakes. The backorder in indefinite.

At 109 days and counting.

I was given a date of 2/12 by my SA. But I was also given the date of 1/27 and then "early January" before that. Obviously I will not hold my breath. There is some speculation from the SA that BMW is redesigning the intake manifold to prevent or reduce the issue. Have you heard this? Lastly, do you think after all this waiting, an engine clean and new manifold will do the trick?

Is there any recourse for the warranty? I bought this car in 10/13 with the expectation of having warranty coverage (CPO) through 9/16. This has already effectively taken 3 months of my warranty away - would it be reasonable for BMW to extend the CPO by the amount of time the car is grounded in service?

I have heard similar dates as well. Yesterday was the latest with the indefinite back order info. Other than random rumors posted here, I have not heard anything regarding a redesigned intake manifold. Considering only 10k or so were sold, I find it a bit unbelievable that R&D would be spent on a discontinued model.

Absolutely not! This is not a cure. It only remedies the symptoms of the problem. At this point there is not a cure from BMW.

yeah, unless theyre worried about a lawsuit that seems unlikely. Even if it is redesigned I dont see that helping unless they somehow make it out of a different material that the gunk doesnt stick to. Wont hold my breath for that one, that is some seriously sticky stuff.

exactly. Car should be pretty much like new after the service, but the cause of the problem is still 100% there. Carbon clean service is a bit like shoveling in a never ending snow storm. Might be clean now, but give it a while and it will be chock full again

Spoke with my SA yesterday. Sounds like the list of intake manifolds had grown to 600 and I was about 300 on the list. Since then, many parts have been shipped so that we are now #80 on the list.

Didn't pull the trigger on another car but have been negotiating a bit to see what they will do. Latest verbal offer was to trade me out at purchase cost - that gives me negative equity of about $1200 because of lump sum sales tax minus a few payments, loyalty credit, etc...

Having a closer horizon is helpful, but since the problem won't be ultimately fixed, I'm struggling with whether to take my $1200 lump now and get out or to hold the course. It sounds like this problem has officially come to light within the BMW community and I'm wondering how that will affect resale value and/or trade in for this model in the future. My car was the dealers first diesel and now the CPO manager is kicking these diesel trade-ins to auction rather than keep them on his lot.

Any opinions on getting out of this car vs. keeping it with freshly cleaned engine and hopefully a 50,000 mile reset?

Based on the numbers, the backlog has reached ~6% of total sales. With the problem manifesting at ~40k miles, the number is likely to get worse with a greater number of sales occurring as 2011 models.

Still waiting on mine. Newest estimate is it will be ready in a couple of weeks. Today is day 129......
