Got another idea for an intake? I like the idea of the CAI, but not sure how BOVs will fit with it. They claim that most aftermarket BOVs fit, but I would have to see it to believe it.

Eric and tony both seemed to think that an after market intake was not the necessary cuz the bmw one is good enough. they found on one of the dynos that with an afe intake and the hood closed, it lost 20hp. they opened the hood and gained the 20 back. weird

Hmm, interesting. I would be curious to see what car they saw that on with the aFe and the graphs.

afe seems to nto be producing any power as of yet...the basic dual cones seem to do well if you are with a tune..but ther has to be some improvement yet to be done

as far as BOV...the n54 is not designed for it, and ive seen people have nothing but problems with BOV as the engine is made for DVs

*not trying to dog the afe..but it seems a lot of the cooler air comes from under the engine bay, and it seems like that heat shield they have also is a cool air shield in practice...

I have been meaning to do a little research on this, but can you briefly explain the DVs and what they do?

BOV and DV essentially do the same thing with a basic difference.

BOV vents excess boost pressure into the atmosphere, DV recirculates it to the pt before it enters the turbo to in theory, reduce lag. The argument is that this recirculation could recirc hot air back into the turbo...but in practice, if a car comes with a DV, it was designed to function with it (ie..boost target reaching etc...it expects a certain flow of air/pressure via this valve)

sinec this car didnt come with a bov, theres no pt swapping, since it wasnt designed to use one other than for the fun noise, but increased potential for lag (unproven...just in basic functional theory)

Thought the engine did come with BOVs but just some cheezy little ones.

nope, the N54 comes with DV's

and you wont see a need for upgraded ones (to handle higher levels of boost) until you are reaching 15.5+ lbs of boost or so (stage 3 for procede...and map 6/7? on jb3)

Not trying to argue, just trying to get a good solid image, but this link here shows the N54 has two blow off valves (#9 and #13) unless I am reading it wrong:

a DV is a type of blow off valve technically...

but the BOV most people refer to, is the single unit type, which our car was not designed with, since our car has dual DV's which recirc the air

Ok, makes since now. Thanks

So now that I am clear, what do you gain with the after market DVs?

ability to hold higher boost pressure w/o leaks/better flow

but in practice...our stock lines/valves are fine until you start trying for 15 lbs boost or so, then you might get more consistent boost pressure with the upgraded valves...until that pt, you wont gain anything other than cool looking dvs

**edit: to be clear...no power gains, just consistency of power @ higher boost targets if you have a car running higher boost (15.5 + lbs or so)

At this point I am not feeling so happy about the aFe. With Tony running it on the same engine, I am sure it is doing the same to my car. Maybe that is why the car still feels laggy to me. Could it be that I installed the aFe just after the last software update and the lag I am feeling is the reduced horsepower? May swap it back to OEM here soon and see if I can tell a difference at all.
