I know you know this but I purchased my first home defense handgun during the riots of 2020. Best decision I ever made. I don't open carry but at least I know I can protect my family if *** hits the fan.

You may never, ever have to use it, but if a situation ever arises where you need to, you'll be elated that you made that decision back in 2020.

I bought my first handgun back during the Clinton era when the original assault weapon ban was being discussed. A simple revolver. Then I bought a Sig .45 which I put next to the bed with a loaded magazine thinking all I had to do was rack the slide and I was prepared. Point of this is - I never test fired it or learned how to hit anything. But I thought I was protected.

Few years later I moved to Arizona from California. And finally took the Sig to the range. Racked the slide - pointed it at a target - and CLICK.

Racked again and CLICK

I had a useless rock if I had needed a firearm. Turns out the springs were too tight and by loading a single round into the mag and shooting it worked. The with repetition eventually it worked with a full mag.

Consider this a public service announcement to people without experience with firearms. Even the best quality manufacturer can deliver a weapon that needs breaking in so you HAVE to learn to shoot it and make sure you have a weapon and ammo that work together or you aren't prepared.

What happened the other night in that stolen vehicle chase along 10/110???
Patrol units backed off, but air ship was supposed to be following. NBC copter showed the abandoned vehicle sitting pegged against a lightpost for at least 2 minutes, still no flashing lights. Public was walking by, gawking in the windshield, then just kept moving.

I'm not sure. I was off of work, however, surveillance mode is a common tactical consideration when it comes to using the helicopter. When in surveillance mode, patrol units completely disengage from the pursuit and allow the helicopter to carry primary responsibility. Surveillance mode is used in an effort to protect the public when a pursuit is traversing into dangerous territory and the potential for injury to innocent civilians is high. The drawback to surveillance mode is the fact that patrol units are minutes away when the pursuit terminates, which is what you were witnessing. At the end of the day, a stolen vehicle is only a property crime (…unless it is tied to an assault, kidnapping, murder, etc.).

He started out just kinda driving. They tried spike strip and then connected with a PIT, but he was going too SLOW and he easily corrected. Then he was up to 60-70 on surface streets, often crossing over yellow to avoid traffic. That's when they went surveillance. Nobody on news even saw a passenger (and little poodle) for at least 20 minutes. Then the speculation over whether kidnapping, or person was sleeping in the back

I thought units still stayed within a couple of blocks, not completely disengage. "Tell the pilot to call station if the driver stops. We'll roll units then"

It started sheriff's because it was all on surface streets, not sure who had the final detail. They stayed in a pretty small (5 mile?) radius of where the pursuit began.

What is the best way to handle a self defense shooting? What should be said and what should not be said?

My advice in a self-defense shooting is to first make sure the weapon is holstered before LEO's arrive (…if possible; a dynamic situation may still require you to have your firearm drawn until authorities arrive). If the shooting occurred in a public place, lie on the ground once the police arrive. Be ready to be detained and placed in handcuffs until the situation is Code 4. Be sure to articulate that you were scared for your life and/or the life of your family members, that you attempted to de-escalate and that the suspect put you in a situation where you had no other choice but to draw your weapon and fire rounds at the suspect. Never, ever say that you weren't scared or in fear for your life (…trust me, some people do, and it nullifies the self-defense argument). Never, ever say that you approached the suspect/closed the distance. That doesn't mean that you need to give up the ground you've already covered, but closing the distance turns you into the aggressor (…in the eyes of the defense or the shitty D.A. that decides to file charges on you).

In PIO class today (….yep, I'll be press trained after today), we found out nobody is applying for LAPD positions. It's so bad now that LAPD is offering housing incentives for people to apply. If hired, LAPD will pay the rent. It's that bad!

That's quite an incentive. Still not enough for the shit they have to go through in today's climate imo.

Haha. Maybe if I was 20 years younger and the idea of free rent was more attractive. My back just gave out on me again a couple weeks ago while training. Luckily this time it's just a pulled muscle. Gotta take it slow from now on.

I'm pretty broken from rolling myself. Everything hurts right now. Rolling two days in a row is a lot.
