I appreciate your approach and normally it would make sense except that it does not account for the fact that repair costs are incurred more frequently as the car ages, thus previous two years are not a good indicator of future costs. The question is, is it possible to quantify the ratio at which the costs accelerate over time to provide a proper forecast?

Look at the official maintenance schedule for your car. Determine the major maintenance costs that you'd have to perform in the next 2 years of ownership based on miles driven. Then you calculate the projected costs of maintenance over next 2 years and add this into the math. From previous experience: my old VW Jetta was 4 years old when I got it. For the time I've owned it the only thing that actually broke was the mass airflow sensor. Wear items such as suspension, bushings, oils and liquids were replaced on a preventative maintenance basis. The overall annual cost of ownership did not change at all from year 4 to year 10 of ownership. It was not until the car became 11 years old that it was beginning to exhibit random electrical problems. I am fairly confident that the same will be with your BMW. If you figure out that the turbos will need to be replaced at 60K miles and plan for that, then you should be OK.
