Hearing about valve/head replacements, buy backs, etc. ... how many times will BMW do this SIB? Someone needs to come clean if this can cause long term damage for those that want to keep their cars beyond the warranty.

Still no fix for this problem? I was thinking that the new cars being delivered now would have been fixed. Perhaps the ones being orderd and comming over now have the new design. I just orderd a 328i coupe blk on blk sports pkg, heated seats, 6spd titanium trim. Hope its not as noisy as my 06 325i was!

I have an 08 328i, build date was Feb 08. Car is almost broken in (1100 miles), and I just noticed this "tick" last night for the first time (sounds more like a metallic tap). Definitely only at idle. Just a thought, could this be a oil pump/pressure issue? I know at idle oil pressure is lower until revs go up. It just seems to me that oil is not getting to the valvetrain until certain rpms. Just my $.02.
Oh NUB from the IE just saying what's up. |

Car built around Sept '07, received Nov '07... I first experienced this ticking noise during startup/warmup around late Dec to early Jan. I thought it was just the weather and the engine needed to be warmed up. But after reading this whole thread, I thought wrong. The ticking noise got worse. Recently, it's taking longer for the ticking noise to stop. I'm sure BMW NA is aware of this issue and hopefully finds a fix asap. The noise makes the car sound shitty~!

my 328i
I am having the same problem
my car 2007 jan 328i 5500km sounded like a 72 bettle. Grabbed my camcorder filmed it call the dealer let a rep hear it. Funny the first said the ticking is normal untill they heard it and said shut if off. called the tow truck they droppped it off. It was the long weekend so they looked at the car on Tue. They looked at it for 5 mins heard the noise bleed the system. I was to pick up the car in 1 hour so they can clean it. I was mad and left the car there over night. went yesterday to pick it up and they said I owe for a oil change? Had one book in 2 week before my problems. I told them to F@#! off im not paying that. How am I to reproduce the same problem now that new oil is in the car. Had a long meeting with the service manager and he told me that all I have to do is hear it again just bring it in. They will fly a rep out to tell them what to change. I read somthing that said the oil sent in the cars was not good?? or something like that. What the hell is PUMA? thanks for all the info and I hope they fix it or replace it look like I should have picked my 2nd choice A IS350 have they fixed the problems one the new one series? |

PUMA is the dealers process to escalate the problem to BMW and direction on what to do. Think of it as a "ticket" for your IT helpdesk.
Just try to be patient and let them know that you aren't going to back down from this or is willing to accept that ticking noise.

ticking
now Im part of the BMW PUMA. not happy. 4 days after they bleed the car and 70km it sound the same just not as loud. I rev. the car to 4000rpm and it went away. The thing I wonder is I was told by the Service manager that the earlier E90 had a head problem they would let the valves run dry as they sit.My build date is Jan 2007 must be the first ones after new years!!! The new heads don't?
has anyone heard of this ? thanks again for this post |

It took some time but the new cylinder head arrived last week and I just picked up my car. The tech I worked with was really awesome and extremely helpful answering my questions. I hope this fixes the ticking noise...we'll see.

I went to the dealer about 3 times until the SA actually heard the ticking noise. You have to be sure that it is making that unusual noise before they put a note to actually fix it. I waited about 2.5 weeks to get the new cylinder head in.

It took about 2 trips. Both times the tech clearly heard the noise so it wasn't difficult to justify having the work done. Plus, the tech I worked with was very knowledgeable and helpful and knew exactly what steps to take - first bleed the valves and if that didn't work, replace the cylinder head. At the first trip, they bled the hydraulic valves and that fixed the problem for about 10 minutes (the noise came back on the drive home). After replacing the cylinder head, I haven't heard the ticking noise. However, it's only been a couple days so I'm still crossing my fingers... |

I guess i got "lucky" they heard it the first time i took it in, about 3 weeks ago. Yes definitely keep us updated, thanks. Definitely something we have to address ASAP. Sometimes I think man...maybe I should just let it go because once the car has been driven the noise is gone. But it's just not normal even my SA said it. Plus i keep going back to this article that someone posted here:
http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews...ons/index.html Just wondering does this happen to the N52's more than the N54's?? |

So exactly what is the issue with this ticking noise? I've had this noise occur off and on. It used to occur more often during the break in period, but now it only does it occasionally on cold start ups (I have 4,500 miles). From reading some of the responses in this forum, it sounds like this problem is unsolvable? Does anyone else with a 328i notice this problem persisting or does it eventually go away?
