Hello all,

I thought I would post my dealings so far, I do seem to have fallen foul to the 320i problems. I’ve just come back from BMW Belfast, they say that I will be able to pick up the car tomorrow after 17:00. I dropped it in around March this year when the engine warning light came on, all I got was a software update (though it did seem to sort out the problem for a bit).

In June/July the warning light and major shuddering started, took it to BMW Belfast who did a software update, change the NO2 sensor and (I think) number 4 coil.

Well at the weekend it started again (worse than ever), BMW Belfast say they can fix the problem and that ‘there is not issue with the 320i engine).

I’ve been lucky in the sense that it hasn’t cost me anything (so far) it’s all been done under warranty which amazingly runs out THIS FRIDAY!

Oh to top it all off I just found out that the stealer who sold the car to me did not carry out the last service as they told me they had, they have also lost the service book, it’s taken since March to find that out! The stealer (who isn’t BMW) said they will take the car in, REservice it (lol at the ‘RE’ bit) and do up a not service log book.

All in all great fun! I’ll report back tomorrow on the state of the car after repair.

I have to say that BMW Belfast have been very accommodating, they didn’t sell the car but have been very helpful throughout the whole process.

A few months ago, I had an injector, spark plug, and coil pack replaced under warranty. This was after an engine warning light and going in to limp mode. This happened just a few weeks after buying the car. At the time I was using 95 RON fuel, to see how the cheaper fuel would perform. I later tried 97 RON, and 99 RON fuels. The high octane 99 RON make a great difference to performance. After 4-5 tanks my car has exceptional torque, and doesnt suffer from the rough idling and slow response I had before. I think it would be useful for posters to state what kind of fuel you are using. I have found 95-97 RON fuel to be awful in this car. Tesco Momentum fuel appears to suit this car very well. I do wonder if the engine fault I had was down to bad fuel, and I dont know what the previous owner used to use. My car was made September 07.

That is Soooo spooky!

I just went into the thread to say that 8 weeks in, and after the car running OK at first, I decised to run it on Shell Optimax. 3 tank fulls in and it is simply a different car. Far smoother and far more torque.

I have just done 700 miles over the past week, a mix of motorway/dual carrigeway @ 80mph, A roads and B roads (but not much urban) and it has given me 39 MPG. Before it was doing closer to 30 MPG.

Well happy.

318i Engine Warning Light

Hi,
I bought a 2007 E90 318i ES N43 2.0 in Feburary
and about a month ago I got the yellow engine warning light.
The car was jerking like a teenager, so into the garage and they replaced 2 induction coils.
Then less than a week later I got massive jerking and red engine light.
Tow to garage and got 2 Fuel Injectors and more Induction Coils.
Another 2 weeks later I have the yellow light again. Jerking always happens on low revs.
I might try using good quality fuel and see if that helps.

This thread is a real wakeup call.

I'm just hoping they can make it go away long enough so I can sell it.

I won't buy another BMW again. (This is my 4th)

Hi,

does anyone know if or what the perm fix is for the 4cyl engine.

I have only owned a 320i 2008 ED for 1.5 weeks and its had................................
a coil a plug and an injector already
I have huge concern and just cant beleive that in this modern time there is no accountability and the only way out is to sell
when I got it back yesterday I fully tanked on shell v plus

Don't think there is one I'm afraid. Mine's thankfully not had to have anything replaced yet but it's always had a strong shake/shudder at 1000rpm and recently increased vibration and random revs drops when sat at lights. Had a software upgrade which allegedly fixed it, I beg to differ.

It's one of the reasons I'm selling up as I'm losing confidence in long-term reliability.

Edit: Should add I've used V-Power all the way, recently tried Tesco Momentum to see if there's any diff - if anything that's made the engine more 'edgy' at low revs

It is an ED (no stop start though as it's auto). July 08 build date but I got it June last year.

There are other reasons for changing (want diesel due to mileage and convenience of the touring). I was planning on seeing out warranty, but my confidence in this engine is dwindling

I'm still 'touching wood' with ours. Apart from the odd 'misfire' when cold which I accept as the engine leans itself down it has been ok. No doubt about it though, after a few tank fulls of V Power it has also been smoother and more powerful too. I don't do a big milage (about 8k per year) so it's hard to justify the extra cost of a diesel. The car, which has still only done 13k too. However, based on this thread, I think I may see it through to the end of the warranty then get rid.

A pity I hadn't seen this forum before buying - I would certainly have paid the extra for a diesel or 6 cyl petrol at the time rather than take an early trade in 'hit'. In every respect though the car is everything we hoped it would be, so overall - very happy - so far!

FFS, I'm part-exing this thing on Wednesday and the warning light has started flashing at me today with the engine all shuddery and hesitant.

It's done the shudder thing a couple of times recently, each time it just happened to be after I'd filled up. I've been V-Power all the way, then I topped up woth Momentum, got a bit of shudder then fine for a week. Then I topped up (so maybe 50/50 mix) with standard Tesco UL, got some more shudder 5 mins afterwards then fine for a week.

Today, as I'm part-exing I've stuck in £40 of Tesco UL so it's probably nearly 100% standard UL now and I get the shudder and engine warning light.

Does the congregation here think there's any benefit/point in me brimming with some V-Power to richen the mix a bit to see me through to mid-week? I have an 80-mile round-trip commute so that's 240 miles I need to do.

I have asked if there's any chance of swapping cars on Tuesday instead, they can't tell me until Monday if that can be done. Means a day off work (and I'm on daily rate but I can cope with that, a day off appeals )

Not a happy end to the car for me, someone shunts me last week and now the engine's going tits-up!!

It's defo disappointing, the first time since I started driving in 1987 that I'll miss a day of work due to car troubles - and that's including a Rover 200 I owned for a while

I traded mine two weeks ago for a 2010 320d M sport coupe with all the options I wanted and in space grey which is my favorite colour, and I have to say my god what a difference I am back to enjoying driving again. Brillant car and to top it off it does some serious mpg

And mine's now gone.

I've now got a 2010 318D M-Sport Touring in Sapphire Black. Considering it's a drop in litres I'm not feeling a difference in power at all, it definitely feels better pulling up the M62 to Saddleworth.

+1 re the mpg, and it's only £30 tax too. Remind me again what the point of a Prius is

No drop in litres - your car has exactly the same 2L lump as the 320d, just in a different state of tune.

Colsen, I assume that you have had trouble with both of them and if so did they both share the same problems?

How did the dealer treat you since you had two of the same vehicles?
what problems did you have (hope the list aint to long)

Well - I have decided to 'cut my losses' and part with the 320i. I Pick up a nice 'fully loaded' 330d Auto on Thursday. Well Happy. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=466219

Although I have had a trouble free time with the 320i (for all of 4 months), I do regret buying it. Also, it has recently become quite hard to start, which from the accounts of others is where all the problems begin. I just need to 'nuse' it through to the end of the week now.
