I did have a financed car that I needed to get rid off, which was my first new car so I got screwed on with a bad finance deal.
I went to Carmax and they gave me a reasonable offer but a bit under what I owe on it but that was expected.
At the end, on the day I went to pickup my new E90, I've asked the dealer to appraise it for me just in case so I can compare trade-in offers. It ended up being the same offer as carmax, so I took it and transferred the balance to my lease. Easy and painless, though the dealer will make his profit on me by selling the old car, which is fine, I had no other choice.
I appreciate you sharing this information. If I am understanding you correctly, you would have got the same deal on the 335i regardless of whether or not you in the end traded in your old car. You just needed to unload your other car and since it was the same offer at Carmax and the dealer, you opted to simplify things and just do everything in one transaction with the dealer. If this is the case, then you got a great deal on your 335i. I hope this is indicative of current market conditions and hope these kind of deals hold through into early 2008!!!

I'm only confused on one item - you mention your trade-in net leftover loan balance was transferred to your lease. So, did you lease your 335i or buy it/finance it? I'm not as familiar with lease transactions but assume you still need to negotiate the initial starting value of the car. The lower the starting value, the better your lease payments will be all other things being equal.

If you leased, then I'm not sure if your $499 over invoice deal would be truly representative of the finance/buy market for the 335i. Too many other variables come into play.

You need to negotiate the price of the vehicle no matter what.

Invoice + destination was $42,425.
MSRP + dest = $46,100

final price before sales tax. etc = $44,000

=$1,575 above invoice or $2,100 off of msrp

Just wanted to do the calc so I can refer back to this entire thread if I go with the 335. This was very helpful as a reference point! Thanks!

Did you buy or lease? Did you have a trade-in? If you leased, then I don't think we have enough information to answer your question.

If you bought the car and didn't have a trade-in, then you definitely got a great deal.

If you bought it but got less than kelly blue book/wholesale on your trade, then maybe not so much . .. let us know so we can get more value out of this thread! Thanks!!!

Did you have a trade-in? Lease or Buy? This thread is useless without full disclosure. It doesn't matter what you negotiated on your new car if you got a horrible # on your trade-in (if you had a trade in.)

That being said, assuming you had no trade and you bought the car, that sounds like a very good deal on an 08.

Need your advice on a 2008 335i Sedan Price

Hi Everyone-
First off thanks for the amazing information at this forum!
With that being said, I finally narrowed down my choice of car to the 2008 335i Sedan.
A friend of mine recommended I use CarsDirect.com to get my car.
I got the following quote:
Car 39752
Sport Package 1545
Steptronic Automatic 1210
Paddle Shifters 90
Premium Package 2320
Cold Weather Package 910
Comfort Keyless Entry 455
iPod/USB 365
Navigation/i-Drive 1910
Rear Window Shades 525
Park Distance Control 320
HD Radio 315
---
Total For 2008 335i Sedan: 49,717 (without tax, licensing..etc)

The biggest price discrepancy is for the price of the Car. From the pdf file from this forum (MY08E90.pdf)showed the invoice car price is: 35,790, retail price: 38,900 and CarsDirect: 39,752.

I really need to make a decision and require your help, is the 3,962 price difference expected? From reading these forums, I dont think that I can get the car at invoice, but I also think that 4,000 dollars over invoice is too much.

Please let me know, your advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, it certainly is. If you contact the fleet manager (aka internet sales guy) at several dealerships around the LA area I think you will find you can get sedans for 1000 or less over invoice.

Over sticker is no way near where the market is on these cars. You need to deal directly with a dealer and/or use another buying service as that's not even close to being competitive.

I got my 335i...
Steptronic
Premium
Sport
Paddles
Nav
CAccess
Park Distance
Jet Black on Black
1940 over Invoice....had them throw in All Weather mats and Carpeted mats. still...paid a little too much.

48600 MSRP....after haggling with two dealers my best offer was for 46400 but I would have to order the car and wait 2 months. Another dealer had the exact car I wanted on the lot, but they would only come down to 46900. I took the 46900....feel like I paid 500 too much, but I am ok with it. Love the car, no regrets. I figured invoice to be 45000. I think 1500 over invoice for the 08's are a good deal...not great, but good for now. 500 to 1000 for an '07 is a good deal right now.

Do you also by chance have the "sun shade" option? Or did they slip in a charge of $350 for those two sets of floor mats? Reason I ask is your car with the options you listed only adds up to $48,250 (includes destination charge too.) The sun shade is $350 - that's the difference between the MSRP you listed ($48,600) and # I calculated ($46,250.)

Assuming you do have the sun shade option and the car's MRSP was $48,600, invoice is actually $44,735 so you actually did a little better than you thought ($2165 over invoice.) FYI, I got all my info from www.kbb.com.

If the car is going for around $1500 over invoice, then it's no big deal to pay a relatively small amount more to get the car right now vs. ordering it. I totally understand your perspective. Curious. . .was the dealer willing to give you that price regardless of whether or not you bought one off the lot or ordered one? In my prior car buying experiences, the dealers were always way more willing to negotiate on their inventory vs. placing an order with them. Admittedly, my prior cars were not in the 335i league - all Fords, Chevys and Hondas in fact! Maybe it's different. . .maybe it's not.

Although no one seems to want to answer this question, I'll ask you as well - did you have a trade-in?

I'm going to guess not give your deal. As you said, I think the true current market price of the 08 335i sedans are closer to $1500 over invoice if you strip away the "noise" in a car deal (such as the value of a trade.)

We can all get a killer deal "at invoice" if we are trading in a car and we allow the dealer to significantly undervalue the trade! That's been my point. This information would make this entire thread even more valuable than it already is, but for some reason no one wants to let us in on this detail of their "deal" (I've asked several people in this thread.) Maybe because they didn't really get a good deal when you include the undervalued trade-in allowance.

I traded in my Motorcycle, but I had asked for cash back. Could be a reason why I didn't get the best deal out there, but I got a very fair price for my bike, plus its not really the season to be selling bikes and they are going to lose money on it come this next year.

My dealer didn't care about the invoice which most don't. As like some other members have mentioned my buying experience was very different at BMW then let's say Ford or Toyota. The salesmen there kept going back and forth to their FM and come back with a new price. The BMW rep I was working with was the FM. He only went and talked to the GM like twice. I did give him a hard time and the FM ending up writing me a a personal check for the difference of the price I wanted compared to what the Dealership wanted to sell the car for. I wasn't pushing to get the car for $1000 over invoice, my goal was to get the car TTL under the MSRP as far as I could. They can sell you the car for 2k less then MSRP, but then TTL is going to cost another 3k at some places, so you back to having the whole car for MSRP or more. Guess I just look at it different. BTW my car was ordered, I might of had more leverage if it was on the lot, but the dealerships here don't order any 6MT, they mentioned they only have had one go through them and that was the first batch of the 07's.

TTL = tax, title and license? Tax title and license fees won't vary at all dealer to dealer. As far as I know, your car purchase sales tax is indexed to your county of residence. You pay the same sales tax where you live for the car regardless of where the dealer is located (at least for dealers located within your home state; not sure about out-of-state purchases.) Otherwise, dealers in high tax areas would have a competitive disadvantage due to a higher sales tax. I know it's this way across the Midwest states but I suppose it could be different in a few other states. Title and Licensing fees are a simple pass-thru from the state gov. to the customer, so there should be no difference whatsoever for those fees among dealers. Not positive, but I believe it's even illegal to mark up such pass thru fees in most states.

Another bull-shiznit fee that does appear on new car purchases would include "document preparation" or "doc" fees. Total baloney fees, but depending on the market for the car you are purchasing you may have to pay it. It usually isn't more than $150-$250. In the past, I've asked dealers to waive this fee and they always have. My last two car purchases didn't include such a fee - I didn't even have to ask they just didn't even put it in. Maybe it's less common now.

I need to reseach this "MACO" fee or whatever it's called.
