I took my grand daughters last Christmas. Magical, but EXPENSIVE. They jack up all the prices close to double through the first week of January.

I don't know if he sees any of that money. I mean, I always see him driving a Mini Cooper... But with all the money they charge over at Disney World, you'd think Mickey Mouse would be driving a Rolls Royce!
Then again, I hear he does live in a pretty nice house: Magic Castle, Disney World by ddk632, on Flickr Hope you're having a great holiday! |

Nice shots, David.
I'm waffling between the 6D and the 5D MkIII. Some of my favorite shots from my looooong walk around London back in September were taken at a shutter speed of 1/6400s or 1/8000s. I'm wondering now if the 6D's 1/4000 limitation will make me regret buying it when I decide to use one of my fast primes outdoors. I love the low light focusing ability of the 6D, but the high ISO noise performance is pretty much equal on the MkIII. I don't care about GPS and while the wifi would be cool to have, it' not a deal breaker for the MkIII. That price, though....

Of course, that analysis ignores price. If price is a problem, the the 6D will work well, just not as well. I have a pro wildlife photographer friend that uses a 5D MkII, which the 6D equals and/or surpasses in most respects. Oh, why in the world are you shooting at such high SSs? i shoot birds in flight, running deer and rabits and consider 1/2000-second fast. I only go higher for humming birds in flight. Dave

The other issue is one of extra camera bodies. If I get the 6D, I'll feel like I need to keep the 7D for wide open daylight shooting and those rare occasions when I need faster AF tracking. With the MkIII, I'd be free to sell the 7D and my EF-S lenses to offset the cost. That said, if I knew ahead of time I was going to shoot wide open in sunshine, I could always mount one of my ND filters on the lens first. Hence the waffling. The lower cost of the 6D is certainly attractive.

I hope this is not a controversial opinion, only my experience and what I learned while shooting film SLR's and getting started ...
In broad daylight, an ND filter not only will serve to keep the shutter speeds to a reasonable level, but also increases contrast in the final image. For this reason, if I do go out shooting in the middle of the day, I will bring an ND filter in my bag for the contrast and not for the shutter speeds. The latter is a byproduct of the former, for me. It's like wearing sunglasses. The only time recently I've been out and needed to use 1/4000 (or could have needed faster), coincidentally, was when I brought with my on my motorcycle only my Sigma f/1.4 and my XTi, and forgot my filter pouch! Since its the snapshot thread, I like to add a snapshot with these discussions Here's the shot from that day ... Diavel on A1A by ddk632, on Flickr So I think the max shutter speed is a really small feature to base this decision on. Look at it this way: say you but a Mark III - will you, when asked, say that your primary reason for the purchase was the 1/8000 max shutter speed? Or (more likely) you'd justify the decision with AF and FPS? Last edited by ddk632; 12-26-2012 at 06:42 AM.. |

Welcome back, Chewy! How's life treating you?
David and Dave, I went with the 6D after all. I have ND filters if needed and I really like low light photography, so the 6D sounded better. That price difference was the killer for the MkIII. Now I need to wait until Jan 2nd before it's in my hands. Amazon has a decent deal on them. They're $1999 and you get 6% back in store credit. That brings the final price to $1879.

Hey Chewy. Welcome back.
Mark, I think you'll be really happy with the 6D. Dave

Thanks guys.
Mark, it's been a whirlwind for the past 6 or so months. I broke up with my longtime gf, found someone else, got engaged and married pretty quickly in India. I was also busy with work, might be moving to Minneapolis in the next couple months if I get my "dream job", etc. I've heard good things about the 6D. I think you would've enjoyed the jump to the 5D3, but the 6D is a better value for the kind of shooting you do most of the time. I think you'll really like it!

Great shot, Denn. I thought I'd seen all the angles of that bridge, but that's a new perspective for me. Very nice.

If I had the discretionary funds, I would have certainly gone with the MkIII, but I just couldn't justify the extra expense right now. That $1000 could go towards a Sigma 35 1.4 or some such thing down the road. And since this is indeed the Snapshot thread...I present Mr. Wally Buckles.

thanks M_six. If you really want a Mark 3 look around cause the price around this time have been pretty low. I've seen them for as low as $2500. The 6D has some nice features but still lack a few small things that I can say I love about the 5DMK3.

It's been ordered. I'll get it next Wednesday when I get back to the office. Looking forward to some low light work.
