It's all about price range and what's fits you. Every manufacture has slight nuances to their geometries. Ride a few to see what you like in regards to materials (Carbon, aluminum, ti, steel etc) and pick a price range. Then look for something on Craigslist. Generally people sell nice stuff at 50% off of new and generally barely used. Also it's not like cars or electronics, where they go out of date quickly. I have 10 year old bikes that ride 99% as well as the modern stuff.

this.

For sure shop craigslist heavily. Don't rush. Find something that actually fits you. I wouldn't throw a ridiculous amount of money at your first bike, because you'll learn things about how you ride and how you feel on a bike, while using your first bike. That could easily mean you wasted a lot of money buying a super expensive bike that doesn't work for you, or you might find yourself not so in to riding.

sweet, would you be down for a group ride also? I'd love to try to get something together. Although, if we ride, it's gotta be paved. Both my bikes are on slicks, so no dirt for me haha.

I would suggest bringing someone who is familiar with bikes to go with you to check out used bikes. I wanted to buy a used bike, but I didn't know much about sizing, what's "right" and works and how to check the condition of everything. You can read a lot on the 'net but it doesn't really compare to experience. I had a hard time getting something and buying the right thing, even after days of reading up. When I eventually got an idea of what I wanted, I went to the bike store and bought a new bike because I wanted the service and assistance of a shop. As I get more experienced and become more savvy, I'll definitely be buying used... especially road bikes which go for a fraction of the original price.
