can any BMW technicians tell me what is the procedure to replace the lifters,or the
cylinder head.do you have to drop the engine out to gain access,or is everything done from the top. |

So if I am right the ticking noise for you came even while you are driving, even when the car is warmed up? I have the same ticking noise, but only when the engine is cold and it goes away when the engine is warm. Is this the same problem that everyone has or different?

Thats good. Did the dealer say anything about the head replacement. Is it different from the factory head, if so what's different about it.

It only ticks when the engine is cold and it does it ocassionally, not all the time. I actually do not know if the ticking noise increases with speed. The only reason i hear the noise is either when I am in my garage and the ticking noise could be heard cus it echos or when I am at at stop light in between two cars and the ticking noise would echo in between the two cars. What's wierd is it only does it ocassionaly like last week it did it, but today, the car was normal

Ticking was mentioned in roundel and it appears to effect a/t cars more than manual because the A/T's generally drive at lower rpms. This was in addition to the short urban commutes at low rpms which our engines are generally not designed to excel at.

Sadly, with the traffic around here, on many days I could do that without hitting the rev limiter.

Mike Miller, of course, said he knew this would eventually happen when BMW moved to hydraulic(sp?) lifters. The irony is that our cars at meant to be drivin fast, and most who can afford them live/work in dense urban environments. |

Now everyone needs to drive like we stole it! And tell those pigs that we have to speeding, otherwise car is gonna tick and blow. It is all BMW's fault, not us!

@ jcrwu:
I guess it has been a month since they replaced the cylinder head. Did this correct the ticking noise? I have scheduled my second appointment for this issue. Last time they did the bleeding procedure and the noise had reduced for a couple of weeks. It has been about 5-6 weeks now and the noise is louder than ever now. I called my SA and he asked me to schedule an appointment and bring the car in but the earliest appointment I could get was the 17th of July. |

After going in for the same problem for the 2nd time, they opened a PUMA case for me. My SA said if it comes back (the tapping) be sure to bring the car back ASAP. He said they bled it again and the tapping was gone, and i was thinking that's all you guys did? Sure enough as the lot porter was pulling up my car it was tapping/ticking. I was pissed!! So i went back to the the service dept. called my SA over and he heard it. He called the shop foreman and he heard it too. But here's what the foreman said. "We've opened up the PUMA case for you and if you're still unhappy with the car bring it back. However I advise you to drive the car more since it only has 3k miles on the odo." He also said it is a problem and not really. It's just the lifters bleeding down I was like WTF?? He said that yes it's a problem because it makes that tapping/ticking noise, but it won't really hurt the engine. He admitted that BMW has not found a solution to the problem. I said are you sure?? Ok so I thought, let's give it a try and decided to have my wife drive the car since her commute is about 20 miles one way to work. Sure enough it's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard the tapping/ticking sound since. But as soon as it does, it's going back to the dealer right away.
