I suspect he doesn't want to hear this though, he clearly has a bias and nothing anyone says is going to change that.

I'm sure he'd like it if I showed up to his work, watched him do his job for 5 minutes and then began levelling criticism at him and everyone else in his profession. Just sayin'.
When does public safety supercede the execution of duty? Does it depend on what the officer is engaged in at the time?

I'm genuinely curious as I seem to get different answers.
Public safety is always a concern. Please keep in mind that public safety is the exact reason for certain exemptions. Exigency requires haste. Imagine if I just took my sweet 'ol time responding to a domestic violence incident. The end result wouldn't be pretty (...not that it ever is).

My brother says he tries to treat everyone fairly according to whatever he may have stopped them for unless they are just doing something plain stupid.

But he said that he's pulled people who have a clean driving record, and just given them a warning even when he knows most of the time they just haven't been caught yet.

Also attitude goes a long way. The more pleasant the interaction, the more likely the outcome will be better. But some people are assholes from the beginning or even act like you are invading their time because they did something wrong.

Here's one for you...my brother had just got off-duty and was on his way home. He had a guy tailgating him, switching lanes like crazy, and at a red-light blow his horn at him. He said the guy was verbally yelling at him when he just put it in park at the red-light with his hazards on.

The guy was singing a different tune when he seen him get out in uniform. My brother said he tried to use that as an example of why the guy needed to control that type of behavior. He didn't call for an active duty officer although he did radio in his circumstances. You never know who you are behind.

My entire family is involved in someway with the police. But the few times I have ever been stopped...I have always been cordial, compliant, and never asked for special treatment. If I was wrong...then I'm man enough to admit it.

I remember one time making a left turn in a 2-lane pocket. A crown Vic went SCREAMING past me, no lights/sirens, I nearly pissed my seat

Since I grew up with several of the brass I placed a call. Told them the time/date and the chief called me back and said they were responding code (?) to an armed robbery in progress and didn't want the perps to know they were coming

Ok, but we were 10 blocks from the scene, he could have flashed lights/blipped horn

Ten blocks is nothing. You can hear sirens from over a mile and/or miles away, especially at night.

I was OK once I was informed of the reason

There is nothing that says the police have to have the lights and or siren on when responding.....I've done it lots of times for a variety of reasons.....the siren does carry a very long way, the other thing I'll mention is "light fixation", people will sometimes drive towards a flashing light, in my experience people will do stupid things when a police car is coming up behind them with the lights and sirens on, until you experience driving a priority response you just can't believe it.

My 2nd father-in-law was a DA for a county about an hour from Fargo ND. He would frequently make appearances in Fargo, and would drive his S2000 up there if the weather was nice. On such a trip one day he had about 5 minutes of fun playing "tag" with a plain-looking Camaro, when suddenly little red and blue lights started flashing from behind the Camaro's grille. Sure as shit, it was an unmarked ND Highway Patrol car. The father-in-law didn't try to use his position to get out of the ticket, since he knew what he did was wrong. He took the ticket and was on his way. A couple months later he appeared in court and got it reduced to a minor violation that wouldn't appear on his record. On the way home from court he stopped by the Highway Patrol headquarters and talked to the state commander, who he'd known for 30 years. They had a laugh, and he told the commander that he might want to tell the young bucks in the Camaros to have a little less fun on the job. The commander agreed.

I am certainly nicer to cops who stop me than I am to posters here! That said, it wasn't me who referred to "bullsh@t stories", or accuse anyone of having disdain for other citizens, in this thread.
I just realized, besides my earlier exposure to cops (pun intended), I had pretty many dealings with cops at my last job too. We never hassled the cops for putting bullets in dogs. Some didn't agree, but we tried not to second guess (dogs can be scary: I had an English mastiff latch onto my cheek once...).
Who wanted to come to my job to criticize?

I think I see a little bit of "let's shoot the messenger!" in some posts here.

Fact:
1)More than a few towns in the US have been prosecuted for enriching themselves using bad law & bad police enforcement. I think I drive through similar towns (they have beautiful courthouses).
2)Unequal enforcement does occur, illegal or not (red corvette syndrome?). And I don't even drive-while-black.
3)There are other stories out there.

Considering such, I think I have handled the cops here with kidd gloves.

Your anti-cop bias is obvious. You can be a big boy and own it and get the respect due a person who owns their biases. Or you can continue to claim to be "the messenger." Your call. Costs us nothing either way.

A small correction. My anti Slacker cop bias is obvious. You don't know me. I am not one to say "Thank goodness there are brave cops to go out where I won't". I walk the walk. I break up muggings in Brklyn (one push-in attempt with a woman entering her brownstone, one pulling a guy off a woman outside our local (since gone) crack house, one very quiet incident, where I asked the guy if he knew those 3 folks, and he started yelling, "they have a gun!!" I followed them for blocks, hoping a cruiser would come by. They saw me following them. (See, I am a big boy!)

I work for what I see as the good side. Sorry you find the cost of respecting that personal choice as too high.

At my last employment, the boss used to say, "If you can't take the heat...". That was when I worked weekend nights in an emergency room. I could have worked weekday afternoons where the clientele were easier, or I could go to a regular vet & clip toe nails....

Can we rename this thread, "...all easy questions for cops" ?

Great point(s). People attract to police lights like moths to a flame. Additionally, people seem to lose their wits when they see red/blue lights in their rear view mirror(s); they begin to drive erratically. It's better to just speed by them.

I want to wrap up my part of this healthy argument on a sort of positive note, since I am going Upstate & off-grid for a week or so.

I'm sure all the LEO's on here really appreciate all that very special understanding from somebody as totally exceptional and heroic as you. But the boyporn is starting to get kinda creepy, you know?

Yes, the LEO's appreciate it so much they get their panties all bunched up.
Exceptional & heroic are your words, thank you very much! I just try to fight the good fight.
Re: the 'boy porn'. If that's all you got from the story . Forgive me for trying to amuse you; looks like I know my audience, anyway!
And I'm real sorry if these "boys", & what they and others do, make the cops look or feel (sigh) more ordinary. Jealousy is a bitch....

I haven't seen any of the LEO's on here express getting "their panties all bunched up"...only answering questions to the best of their abilities.

As for the porn, when you mention seeing David Duchovny naked most days and then a "drooling" emoji, along with other little snippets....it just comes across odd in this specific thread unless that's your thing. If it is...so be it. I'm don't care about people's preferences in that matter.

And the last statement about making them look or feel more ordinary compared to the pics you posted....I don't get that one.

Most of the LEO's I know are in great physical shape and take pride in their appearance.

Props to them that you looked up to for providing a public service that they volunteered for...but the same could be said about their appearance. Nothing that I would be jealous of.

These are not terms of endearment. But they are very dismissive of me, & my opinions.

"And the last statement about making them look or feel more ordinary compared to the pics you posted....I don't get that one."
There are many people who live lives of virtue equal to what cops do. Why don't I feel the respect going both ways?

Again, RE: porn, are you kidding? And you all hang in the "Off Topic" area of this forum?
But obviously, it was just to get your attention. Do I know my audience?

So let's cool out. I see where the thin blue line has been drawn here.
