So, just to clarify. If i install the Alpine Upgrade Kit I could still use an aftermarket head unit of my choice and not have any problems with the Alpine amp, etc. recognizing my new head unit as long as I am assuming I connect the aftermarket head unit to the original BMW wiring harness?
Also, would I just have to make sure that I set all the settings on the aftermarket head unit flat as to not overwrite any crossover frequencies that the alpine amp is sorting to the speakers? Thanks in advance! |

Just picked up the Alpine kit from the dealer along with the door trims.
The door trims I have though (E91) don't have the foam inserts in them already. As I don't pick the car up until tomorrow, can anyone shed any light as to whether the E90/91 has foam inserts already in the car that I can cut to fit or is there nothing behind the existing triangles?

Incidentally, I found that my car already had foam inserts for tweeters behind the original non tweeter window trims.

Alpine Upgrade Completed on my 335D 2007!
Update,
I had my alpine kit finally installed today, sound is much better than before, treble and bass has improved drastically over the stock system without the tweeters. I paid a total of £540 inc parts/coding and labour, had it completed by this Indy. http://www.twgautomotive.co.uk/ If anyone want's the same price the guy who did mine, Will Gibson mentioned he would honour the price... mention my 335D, silver.. Enjoy! |

Got these fitting instructions from the BMW dealer which says that no recoding is needed. I thought recoding/programming was needed on a post 3/09 car (mines 2011)?

2011 car will definitely need coding.
edit - well reading those instructions, it appears not! Suck it and see!

They are the wrong instructions, and the wrong part numbers for a 2011 car I think too.
You should not have crossovers in the tweeters and the harness should have plugs and not bare ends on them?? |

Just got the upgrade two days ago on my E90 LCI!
Got the Alpine kit & iPhone station. I have one huge problem - i've noticed that the sound from the rear parking sensor is very, very, very quite and only comes from the left side, not the right as it justed to. I'm taking it to the service once again. Do you guys have any idea what happened? Maybe some wire is not plugged in properly? Second question - what is the best treble and bass level for the alpine upgrade? Thanks! |

Has anyone added another amp including the alpine upgrade kit?
I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible that i can tap off the alpine Hifi upgrade wiring for the remote signal for the new amp.

Aren't they all the main 12V live input? The amp switches by sensing the line-level input signal, not with a typical 12V remote signal like normal car amps, so I don't think there is anywhere to tap a switching signal for an additional amp.

Someone else posted that one of those was blank, and if you put a meter in it it will give out 12v when the amp turns on.
I have not tested it myself, but will do tomorrow if I remember. |

E91 Alpine Hifi Retrofit
Hi, thanks to the help on this forum I did this retrofit at the weekend.
I decided to start with the door speakers which took 1 hour for both sides and then to do the rest on Sunday. Just changing these front speakers made a big improvement in raising the sound from knee height and adding considerable clarity. If you do not have budget for the whole retrofit then perhaps order just the separate parts. On the Sunday, I completed the rest which took 3 hours in total. My advice would to remove all the trim first so you can have a clear run at installing the wiring loom. The result of adding the amplifier which drives both the new speakers in the front doors and the existing subwoofers under the seats? Another step up from the results I got from just changing the speakers and the ability to play the music louder without distortion and a less'muddy' sound from the subwoofers. With my BMW club discount of 10%, I paid £360 for the retrofit kit and two new door trims (which have the housing required for the new tweeters) and for this money I would highly recommend it and cannot imagine any after market solution which could achieve better results so I am very satisfied. I've owned two 1 series, one had Logic7 and the other had the Hifi system and although it was not as good as the Logic7, it does sound better than the Hifi system. This could be the difference in cabinet or perhaps just my imagination! |

Hi everyone,
I got the Alpine audio upgrade installed on my E91 LCI. I find the sound to be very very annoying. It sound very high pitched, way too many high tones even if I turn the treble all the way to 0. Music just gives me a headache after listening to it for a while. Sounds distorted too. All in all, so annoying that I am thinking about putting back the original paper speakers. Judging by the good feedback in the forum about this upgrade, I think there must be something wrong with my installation. Any ideas what it could be, what I could point my dealer towards? Thanks |

Hi guys!
As recently stated, i've upgraded my system with the Alpine retrofit upgrade. Everything seems to be working nice, except PDC sensor - i'm getting 50-60% quieter sound when driving back. Any idea on that? Another question - which speakers do u recommend for the subs replacement? Are sws8's only available option regarding size and tech specification or not? And what about rear speakers? They do not sound so much improved after upgrade? As i have understood, they are driven by the head unit, not amp? Is there any replacement for them as well? Tnx! |

This is what it sounds like on an LCI model before the head unit has been coded. Once coded the 6db boost at 15khz is removed, that 6db boost not only makes the treble too pronounced, but it also clips the amp as it is too much for it, which is why you hear a slight distortion. Get your dealer to code it properly. There is a copy of the install instructions that says no coding required floating around, this is wrong and they have probably used that. |
