Thanks Ed and Mark.
I shoot lots of white birds, so the exposure is second nature, even when, like today, I was going back and forth between grey birds and white birds. The problem for me is a bird headed straight at me, with trees behind. Their frontal area is relatively small, even with a big bird and they're closing at around 30-mph. Canon has really improved their predictive tracking mode in the last couple of years, but I find that I still have to bump the AF often to help it keep up. I shot this in two and three-shot bursts. Dave

Great shot Dave! I was just reading up about the AI Servo modes available in the 5DIII. I hope to keep that info in mind when shooting moving subjects. While my wife was jogging in Maine, i was hanging around the marina and some Gulls were flying about. I only had my walk around lens with me so i had to crop this down a bit. But the eye on the one "Coming at you" reminded of this guy.
We actually saw a Bald Eagle nest, two adults and a juvenile while in Maine, but sadly it was while we were Kayaking and i only had my wife's point and shoot with me. Would have loved to had a longer lens with me. 70-200 would have sufficed as they were only about 200-250 from us. Oh well, it was great watching them for a bit. The juvenile had just learned to fly just a few days before we arrived and watching him fly was very interesting. He'd be soaring alone like he'd been doing it forever and then you could see him hit a thermal pocket or a gust of wind and he's be all over the place for a few seconds. The radio controlled pilot in my head kept saying; "keep your altitude 3 mistakes high!" haha.

Joe, nice gull. That 70-200mm, plus a 1.4x TC will get you into a good bit of bird photography, particularly the larger birds. That's how I started.

The new lens is SO much easier to wield than the v1. Still getting used to it, I didn't find a whole lot to shoot today, but the ones I got, I am very pleased with.

Yes, nice moon for sure. Too bad it's mostly cloudy and scheduled to rain this evening.

I'm holding out hope that the skies clear here. They cleared nicely last night.
Yesterday was the Fall Frolic at Lincoln Log Cabin state historical site near here. We went to check it out. Lots of period costumes and re-enactors. Lincoln Log Cabin Fall Frolic by Mark Johnson, on Flickr

Thanks Mark! The 500 is surely awesome!
I don't want people to think you can only get good shots with super high end glass however. This one was taken by my friend using my 1DIV and the 100-400 MKII, which is a lens that I by far use more than any other Stag in the Rocks by lennycarl08, on Flickr |
