Who here owns a condo? I have been a huge fan of renting since I finished college saying homes ownership was always pushed to hard by the gov't and I was proven right by what happened in 2008 (no I am not saying I predict it).

I have always felt renting was better as it was plan cheaper (considering sunk costs of home ownership only) to rent for the space I needed (i can fit all my shit in 200 sq ft).

However, with the prices of condos and houses dropping to crazy levels, the cost to own is becoming closer and closer to renting. For example, I have found a couple condos that would cost me about 300-500 more a month that are much nicer than my current apt and I would go from sharing 1000 sq ft with my buddy to being alone in 1300-1600 sq ft.

So, should I consider buying?

I would only buy a house. I'm never going to rent or buy a condo. It's just me. If you wanna buy a condo, live in it, then rent it out after u get a house that'd be great if u could swing the money. Better to ask asshole al tho

300-500 more a month, does that include the HOA and property tax? You'll also wanna factor in the maintainence cost. Regardless whether you are gonna do the work yourself or not, there'll be some time and money involved. I'm fairly handy with a house, but with renting it's not gonna be my problem.

I don't think home ownership is anything pushed by the gov, but in Chicago the cost of home ownership is usually about 50% more than renting one. When I was in Mi, I can usually find homes that ends up equal to if not cheaper than renting.

I've always own a home for the last 10 years and now I'm on the flip side. I wanna sell and just start renting. I'm done fixing houses.

Forgot to add that if I'm gonna be in Chicago for more than 8-10years, then I think it's much better to buy a good home.

I live in a condo, it's overall great but I do kind of miss the space/freedom you get with a house. You do have to factor in HOA fees too, for my building it's $700 a month. The shared walls aren't bad though, if some broad upstairs is wearing heels you'll hear them but that's about it.
