The near autonomous Google pods that self-drive around Silicon Valley have goofy-ass-looking sensor suites that are impractical for private ownership and those cars still hit things, animals, and humans. The tech can probably get there eventually, but affordability is the real question.
I suspect we are going to need a major new technology to handle self driving - the LLMs such as ChatGPT, as clever as they are and despite the hype, are unlikely give you such as they don't understand anything as they are just statistical models, e.g. they have no comprehension about something being solid and that the car can't enter same space as another solid - they have just learnt they shouldn't cross that line and if the line looks different they may have not learnt not to cross it.

I suspect we are also going to need powerful computers on the car and currently those will take a lot of space and power.

Probably doesn't help with people like Musk thinking humans only need eyes to drive - so fixed cameras can work as well - no my eyes and head are mobile and neural net that's taken decades to train to comprehend the world.

I think This xkcd sums it up

Studies have found no evidence that low level RF energy has impact on peoples' health, so for almost everyone there is no issue or need to worry, but I don’t rule out people being sensitive to EMF as who knows what is buried in our DNA that is only active for a few people and some animals are able to detect electrical signals.

It's more than that actually

- Massive amounts of AI DC's being built right now, so many that there is even a mortarium on new load in Virginia for example. I'm familiar with 9 (yes nine) projects that are 400MW plus.
- Yes, intermittent generation does have an impact on baseload cost, however this is not the primary driver
- Several gigawatts worth of total capacity is being sucked up by companies like yours truly, however it's all curtailable and pretty much all of them curtail when load spikes - but this does absorb baseline generation capacity
- Continued upgrades around the entire system, including new transmission lines being built everywhere to reinforce the grid and have additional redundancy
- More players in the bidding market space makes this even more hyper competitive
- Temperature is pretty hot this time of year, but thankfully not as bad as last year

I hate green morons just as much if not more than anyone else here, but that's not the total story.

I will have to buy some wiper blades next year and I will likely need to buy some windshield wiper fluid in about six months. Inflation makes those purchases just financially devastating. And I will need tires.

The different is lease is usually one owner vs the hundred and hundred of drivers during the rental car lifetime. Simple math

You never know what drivers are doing to the rental car. Can be abusive drivers and passengers.

How many miles in average you drove your car in one year? A rental car can easy 4X of your mileages.

Huh? Curtailment is optional part of purchasing 24/7 blocks of power. You might buy a Mwh in the 24/7 market there for $65 but then if you sign up for say 4CP you can shave the peaks and drop your actual rate to sub 5. It's not expensive, it's a money making venture and part of the life and process of any business that can curtail. It's not like aluminum smelting plants curtail.

Peaker plants come online to make sure we don't see frequency collapse as we dip below 60hz. You're correct in that the government is negatively incentivizing coal peaker plants, and some are being converted to nat gas, which has it's own issues and has it's own volatile market. Part of the reason electricity got so high is because the sheer cost of LNG which was due to Ukraine.

Most places can't get baseline generation built due to green lawsuits and blockages by the federal government. If you're not the en vouge type of generation, they want nothing to do with you.

As far as I know there is no involuntarily curtailment in any market except California.

This is complete bull crap. Anyone spending money on repairing a LiPo battery pack with thousands of cycles is an idiot. All Lipo batteries increase in internal resistance and exhibit a reduction in average output voltage based on number and type of cycles. Replace all or none. It just a fact of batteries. Do you expect replacing the rings on one cylinder on a ICE engine to return it to as new HP and Torque? This battery rebuilding with be the next EV fraud. People will rebuild low out put batteries and sell the car to some new EV victim.

Same similar thing is in London and its 'burbs, the green desease and I'm sure you read the news today. Thankfully we finally recently secured a place well away from there to where people are friendlier... and the roads are faster
