if it's the head gasket i dunno what I'm going to do. Either try to save money and pull the head and replace the gasket myself and send the head to the machine shop, or call a bunch of places to see which place is the cheapest that does good work. Unecessary stress.

btw did you put together that diy for the engine swap?
Were you able to spot the source of the coolant that spilled out? In an overheating situation, the weakest link in the cooling system will give out first. By design, that's the expansion tank fill cap so you'll see coolant pooled in the in the engine bay frame right under the expansion tank. Any change in the oil appearance or white buildup under the oil cap?

If it comes down to it, doing the head gasket isn't too bad. The most time-consuming and obnoxious part of it will be taking off the intake manifold.

I was just thinking about finishing that engine swap writeup yesterday, but I didn't get to it. Right now it's still an outline with all of the major steps, but I need to flesh it out a bit with some text.

no i wasnt able to find the source. however, when i initially popped the hood there was a lot of coolant around the expansion tank so it appeard to have come out of there and dripped down to the driver side fender underneath.

oil color seems fine from the dip stick although i checked it at night using flashlight. I didnt check the cap though. I just swapped it this morning with the bronzit. During lunch I checked to see i lost any coolant and it appears to be at the same level as this morning so i'm crossing my fingers that it was the cap. That would save me a lot of time AND money.

Lemme know once you finish that write up because i may need that when/if i end up swapping the motor out of the bronzit. thanks!

Yeah, with any luck it was just a fluke. The temperature gauge is known to be worthless so maybe it did overheat, but for a different reason.

I'll be working on that writeup some more this week. Will link you to the thread on r3v once it's done.

yeah i hope so. it's weird b/c my temp guage starts off pretty low too and although it read at about 1/3 the way up at normal driving temp, i feel like it should be more closer to half. So i'm on the lookout for someone selling a function temp guage. But I may end up looking for one at the yards next time i go.

Could also be the thermostat being stuck open, or opening too early. I was suspicious of the one in the car and I was going to track it anyway, so I replaced it with one that opens at a lower temp. The temp gauge still sits around the middle, though.

I also had trouble with mine because the solder joints on the cluster were broken. Fixed my fuel gauge that way, too.

...basically everything that can go wrong does seem to go wrong on this car.

Yeah, that's the way it is with these old cars. It's good for peace of mind, though, hahaha.

Man it was pouring on 101 on the way back from South SF. One of the E30's low beams went out, too.

Like I was saying...
