Just curious, and I apologize if Rob has already answered this question earlier, but what exactly is it about the '07 that is different from '08 and beyond and requires additional development work? Also, I've read some posts on this subject that refer to "early '07" models. Does that imply that not all '07s are affected by this additional development?
Thanks all!
Chris

It would appear that the way the MSD80 DME is connected to is CANBUS over serial, as opposed to straight CANBUS for late 07 MSD80 and MSD81, and that requires a bit of extra trickery to flash.

Thanks! If this is true, is there a way for me to tell which "camp" I'm in? Can the VIN tell me, or do I need to inspect something under the hood?

I suspect starting with the build date is not a bad idea, since if you know for a fact you are later than someone else who is already using an AP then you should be OK.

End of June 2007... Anybody using an AP for a build before this?

Ooh. End of June might JUST be the "old" build. I know for a fact October'ish falls under "new", I wonder where the cutoff was. Guess you need some people to weigh in on the thread.... or maybe Rob can suggest a way to check.

I most certainly can answer these questions. The programing in the MSD80/MSD81 is very similar as well as how they communicate over a CAN bus to other modules attached to the vehicle. All N54 based vehicles starting in MY2008 have the CAN bus connected from the OBDII port to the ECU. MY2007 N54 based vehicles (335i) have what is called k-line, or serial, communication from the OBDII port to a "gateway".

The difference between MY2007 and MY2008+ being I needed to write the BMW specific k-line driver to speak BMW over serial/k-line for 2007 support. I have done so and am stress testing the code now before I let in out for beta. Whenever I write a new communication protocol I like to make very sure it's solid before putting it in the hands of the customers.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Rob

yes it does. But people still advise on having a BT cable just to double check.

Rob,

Do you think the next revision of the maps will require a full un-install and reinstall like the last one? ETA?

Great, I swore to myself I would leave this car stock, but with my previous Cobb experience (Stage 2+, '05 STI and Stage 1, '08 STI) I knew I was doomed as soon as I found this thread.

Cobb - What happens if the AP gets damaged or stolen after it was already installed in the car? Since the AP downloads the stock data, would it be a problem if the person wanted to go back to stock again?

I just thought of this because I would imagine more users were leave their AP in their car in case of any emergencies where the car has to go back in for service but this also poses a potential risk of theft as well.
